M135i rattle from the rear when it is cold

Hi all.

I just recently got my M135I about three weeks ago. It is a ex BMW factory car with 11 000km's on the clock. 2013 model.

Loving the car but there is a persistent rattle/noise coming from the rear of the car when driven on uneven road surfaces. I have checked everything in the boot and they seem firm ranging from the medical to mobility kit.

So annoying. In my view, it could be the tailgate trim or even the tailgate.

I asked the dealer about a possible known fix but they were not sure. I was just reluctant to book it in as they would essentially be guessing.

Have any of the other M135i owners on the forum experienced this problem when it is cold outside?

Thanks Charles

Take to bmw they will sort it out for you

Is it a metallic rattle? Maybe something to do with the exhaust like the valve inside it.

Otherwise get someone to drive your car and sit in the boot

check the brake disc dude, sometimes they develop some clearance, causing the Disc to rattle,

Both the M135's i had had this problem.Took the car to dealer and they took the tailgate panels off and used cloth tape to put over the holes where the clips go in.Apparently the steel clips rattle against the metal frame.
Did both cars and they were quiet thereafter.

I am in Vereeniging so it was Vaalridge Auto.Apparently this is more common than you think.Even the x5 is plagued by this.

The 335i's had this issue, however that was due to the exhaust flap activating (opening)

Hi Guys, thanks for all the information and help.

Essentially, I found the problem.

The rattle coming from the rear is a result of the tailgate lock knocking against the loop (D ring in the lower boot) that the lock/catch makes contact with when closed.

The problem is that the D ring loop is encased with plastic and this wears over time causing the annoying rattle.

Last night, I wrapped one layer of electrician's insulation tape around the loop and the rattle is sorted.

I understand that it is not a dealers fix however I am now in a better position to guide the dealership in terms of making the fix more permanent.

Hope this helps the guys that have the same problem on the 1 series models.

If you would like pictures, let me know and I will gladly take some this afternoon and post them.

Fantastic driving to work this morning with a quiet and rattle free cabin.

Cheers Charles

On my car it turned out there was a bracket missing, after autobahn fitted it the rattle was gone. Guess someone at the factory was slightly asleep that day.
