If it was still in the process of warming up, then ignore point one.
It should sit just to the left of the middle when fully warmed up. Should get there in +/- 3km of normal driving.

Now that those gears inside the cluster are 20+ years old, they have become brittle. If you reset while driving, it strips the pinion gear, and the trip meter will not work anymore. So reset the trip after fuel stops only while the car is stationary.
