Low Oil warning

Hi guys..

Stopped at home yesterday and the low oil warning light came on when I switched off the car.
I went to the shops later and nothing came up again. I also checked the oil level this morning before going to work and the oil level was fine.

Today I drove to work and everything was fine, however driving back home, the warning came up again. I stopped and checked the error (CC-ID 28). After checking up on the error, it points to/says low oil.

Is this something to be concerned about?

Car was serviced in April this year and currently shows 4800kms before next oil change.

Either your oil level is actually low or your level sensor is faulty. I'm leaning towards a faulty sensor.

Just to make sure - did you check the oil level via the dipstick?

I had an issue with my oil level sensor on my e46 320d. Each time upon start up I'd get the red oil light on the dash and after about 10 seconds it would go off. I checked my oil level via the dipstick and it was fine. I just lived with it until the next oil service, because you have to drain the the oil to change the sensor. I suppose you could do the same or shorten the oil change interval to get it done sooner.

I was thinking sensor too... But is there a sensor seeing that I have an actual dipstick only?

Almost due for service. Just top up with the right grade to be safe

But it was still fine.
I’ll check it again this morning.

Yes sir, checked via the dipstick.
My car does not have the E-dipstick.

I usually check oil in the morning before starting the car (when engine is cold). Think I should drive a while so the engine can warm up a bit and then I check again?

This is standard with my car as well. Asks for top up 1lt. Seems the car has to be driven before the oil warning light comes on or sensor kicks in to read it accurately. Mine has always been this way. So if you do short drives you won't get that warning. I actually got that warning today again, so going to bmw and ask for top up oil.

On my E60, I don't see that image depicted until I shut down, warning me that the oil level is low, under normal driving conditions, the first "silent" warning is the little "hazard" triangle in the lower right hand side, but no other warning....until I stop and shut down the engine, only then do I get that symbol of an Oil Can.

So I am wondering, could it possibly be a faulty sensor ?

Mines exactly the same. Always been this way even asked agents when I was still under maintenance plan.

Okay, so I checked the oil level before starting the car yesterday and the oil level showed that it’s full “MAX”.

Took the car for a long drive and then stopped at a garage to check the oil level. It’s currently just under half.
So I guess I’ll go top up tomorrow morning then.

You guys think I should fiddle with the sensor when it goes for it’s next service or na?

The easiest and cheapest fix. Buy a 1l top up oil pour in 500ml and see what your oil level then sits at.

On these car, the oil level only really gives you an accurate reading after a long drive.

If you can, rather just do an oil service, you will then know exactly how much oil you have in the car and can then determine if the sensor is faulty based on the reading.
