Low Air intake - 330d

Anyone an answer, please
Flooded gutters on either side of road in a built up area early this year; Driving along and notice water covers whole road in an area which I subsequently discover is a slight dip in the road, i continue into puddle and engine stalls. Car transported home. Next morning, starts up with a puff of blue smoke but all seems fine. I travel 50 km along freeway (averaging 120ks) and when slow down at a stop street hear a distinctive metallic like knocking sound. Car has done 6000km.
Tech report is to the effect that "engine sucked in water through air intake. Water caused hydraulic lock ... and damaged pistons and conrods".
Suggestion 'engine be replaced'.
Cost - own account; :bawling: Motorplan doesn't cover this. :cursin:
Told to claim from insurance (comprehensive cover) - another denial of liability - car (bodywork) not damaged!!!:dunno:
Any suggestions?

Oh dear.... Did you have your own cold air intake installed?

Sorry to hear dude, hope you get it sorted.

Perhaps a lawyer would be a good idea..

Family member experienced a similar issue with an E90 320i, also attempted driving through water on a flooded road. Car stalled and needed to be towed, Motorplan did not cover the engine. You will need to go the insurance route unfortunately.

But how high must the water have been? Must have been up to the kidney grills as that's where the air intake is on these e90's o_O

Was thinking the same thing, its the same on the e46's as well  in fact the intake is in the top most part of the grilles.

had my air filter out this morning and also noticed the intake is at the top above the grill.

water must have been deep or you were driving a bit too fast causing it to splash up

Thanks guys & gals(?)
Wasn't that deep, nor going that fast; can't recal altogether but may have been travelling in second and as entered water I may have changed down. According to info that's when the wash in front of the bumper gets a chance to double back.
What I need now is someone who's Insuarance paid out as mine is saying: "No bodywork damage, no claim!". :banghead:
What gets me is that about 3 weeks prior that, when the N3 was flooded around Jhb I went the back route (via Benoni & the plots) to Heidelberg road and came across a stratch of about 50 odd metres of roadway covered in water and the cars weredriving thru slowly, which I also did and NO prob; now what looked like a puddle effs the car up!:dunno:
As my mate said - seeing it was raining cats and dogs, it must've been a poodle u rode through:clap:

Does anyone here know the saying "sial" (scooby in a lake - from another local car forum)? :)

Reminds me of that vid of the woman heroically saving her 335 coupe in some sort of flood! And the commentary of the guy taking the vid was classic, "...wow, look at the little bubbles coming out of the back!!" LOL
