cant you just fix up the motor?rebore ,new rings and bearings

wouldnt it be cheaper than buying another motor?

Like stated earlier we dont know what the damage inside is until it is opened up.

But will see what happens.

Will keep you guys all updated.

we removed the secondary butterfly from the intake and started the motor again after bleeding the coolant system.

the coolant disappears extremely fast when we pressure tested it, there were 2 small leaks that were sorted out and the coolant still just vanishes really fast when pressure tested... pump the system virtually dry in about 5 minutes...:thumbdo:

no coolant in the sump, none in the cylinders and loads in the exhaust...nothing comes out the plug holes when we crank the motor after pressurizing the system

compression test returned:
cyl 1 - 12.5 bar
cyl 2 - 12.0 bar
cyl 3 - 9.8 bar
cyl 4 - 12.0 bar

what we have found is definite damage in cyl 3 as there are impact marks on the spark plug and when we stripped the broken secondary butterfly we noticed that 1 of the screws and a 15mm piece of the shaft were missing... so it appears that those parts were sucked into the motor when the shaft failed and ended up in cylinder 3.

this is why i suggested the import motor as the costs are less when facing a possibly very expensive engine rebuild that might require head repairs, reboring or resleaving, pistons, valves, etc etc...

but i do believe that the car can be saved but it appears that thunders budget isnt playing with...

RS did you do a wet comp test?
I wonder if the water is being "burned" in the cylinder due to a damaged head gasket or crack in the head water passage.
Were any of the plugs showing water?

:sorry:
Sad reading, hope you can afford to put it right. The Lexus seems a tempting option, cost wise. Good luck.:fencelook:

Sorry to hear Bruce. Hope it all goes well. Just a question though, how would insurance be able to write off the car from engine problems?

As my understanding if the damages equal more than the amount the car is insured for then it usually gets written off.

isn't an insurance claim only really applicable for an ACCIDENT (ie traffic accident) and not for MECHANICAL wear and tear breakdowns, I know of other insurance products that are available for mechanical breakdown, but not very common though.

The mechanical damages was caused by accidental damages. Coz I cant see that a butterfly/valve can break like it did with wear and tear.

Good luck bud, insurances are full of sht. They take "accidents" literally as a car running into another car, or into a wall ect.

When the X's gearbox went, I asked ZF to do a letter for me, but they still saw it as wear and tear, same with the engine.

Hope your insurance is more helpfull

Sorry thunder, I didn't know the witch imploded with its own green magic :mmm:

But maybe its time you get a 6pot. Factor in how much it will cost to redo the engine or get a new engine v/s getting a 6pot E36, you might find the difference isn't that big...

Thing is 6pot will cause me to have a heavier foot. and that will cause more petrol being used. :fencelook:

The witch hasnt been herself. Hoping when and if I get her back that she will have the umf she always had. Co as some of you know for a stick motor she stuck with some of the big guns on here.
