Loss of power and water

Guys I'm having problems with my 318i. This afternoon while driving and going from 2nd to 3rd I had a massive loss of power. Cant get above 40 km/h in 3rd without the car stuttering and starting to rattle. When car is standing idling there is a rattle in front and a knock knock sound in the car.

Then while waiting for car to cool down now I realised that my water is disappearing. Filled the reservoir bottle up and within 10-20 minuyes the bottle is half. But cant see or find any leakages of any sort.

eish, have you checked the oil? if it is at all creamy (has water in) have the car towed to your repair shop, and be ready for a reaming

Oil looks okay. Really scared to drive the car.

Sounded like the fan breaking when the noise started. Any explanation as to the rattle and knocking sound?

And loss of power?

The ratlle I'm guessing is coming from somewhere around the intake mannifold area. But thats when she stands still, dont know where it is when she is moving.

:sorry: Bruce.
It could be anything from a alternator bearing to the clutch/flywheel.

hey Bruce....sorry to hear the "witch" is suffering a bit

Water disappearing at that rate has to be a leak,

or

it is mixing into the oil due to a cylinder head gasket leak, symptoms will be the oil will be a chocolate custard foamy complexion

or

or the water is mixing into the combustion chamber and is evaporarting in the combustion process direct, check for "steam" in the exhaust and the possibly smell of exhaust fumes in the water tank.

all in all doesn't sound too healthy

Like Ralf said water in the combustion chamber or leaking from the water pump because it has broken.
If no leaks likely water in combustion chamber.
You will observe hard to start when cold after it has been left to get cold from being hot as water settles in the bore.

Remove plugs if the car does not want to swing.

The thing is if it disappeared while driving or idling it can be explained. But even of it dissappears.

Water pump perhaps. The bearings collapsed and damaged the seals. :dunno:

I had a water pump fail on my E36 325i many years ago, it leaked lots of water from around the shaft, and the entire shaft had become so lose that the attached fan actually ran "out of true" and actually impacted the radiator, fortunately without causing damage to the radiator.

if you suspect the water pump then possibly check for excessive play on the fan connected to the water pump shaft as well as water leak around the water pump shaft seal

these two symptoms alone lead me to believe water in the combustion chamber, causing the "flame" to be snuffed out (loss of power) and the water causing hydraulicking in the cylinders,(knocking sound)....beware this might lead to bent or snapped conrods and/or bent crank shaft

Even when cold car starts very easy. Never had a problem starting her. Just had her struggle to idle at random times, and then aswell something I just ignored as I thought it might be something I the fuel is on high speeds the car will stutter and then go again like normal.

so you have no steam out the exhaust?

failed pump would explain the noise and the water loss but not power loss...
