Hi Guys,

My gf is looking to buy a new car.

She found a 2008 JCW with about 50k on the clock.

It still has motorplan for another year.

Does anyone know if these cars had any problems with them or what we should look for prior to purchase?

Does anybody know realistic fuel consumption figures for around town driving?

Your input would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks :ty:

Is this the black one on Auto Trader?

2007/2008 is problematic model range. Its best to stay away, particularly noting that the motorplan expires within a year.
Issues are so bad the engine gets a replacement.

Perhaps extending the motorplan and you will be ok should something happen

Also make sure its a Factory JCW and not a Cooper S JCW. But if its the same one from AT its a factory JCW

Common issues are Timing Chain/Water pump/Gearbox

Just make sure the plan is still in place, Very good car though

Timing Chain is a major problem, the Water Pump/Gearbox is more related to the R53 with the Chrysler Platform.

I would only buy it if it had plan and personally 2009 onwards... You can get 09 JCW's for under R170 000 with ease.

They are stonking good cars but the early models were a bit experimental.

Direct me to where you seeing 09 fJCW for R170k :blab:

I sold two last year from Auto Atlantic MINI myself.

An 09 that belonged to the owner of Primi, The Possom WP.

An 09 that was traded in to a lady who works for Hyundai, you will see the car in the car-park in Foreshore.

Both had a year motorplan on them and the first had 2600km (Yes you read that right) on the clock, the second had 64 000km.

You need to realise that at the time a well specced 09 Cooper S with lowish mileage was selling for R200 000, a poverty spec JCW like these or JCW with high mileage like the second one are only worth R15 000 to R20 000 more than a base Cooper S as the JCW has no Retail or Trade Value.

Just to add, because of the lack of a trade or retail on a JCW the trade values on bog standard cars are next to nothing for a JCW, almost the same as a standard Cooper S so the dealers add R15 000 profit and call it a day hence often if your dealer is clued up and wants a sale from you they can conjure JCW's from nowhere for nothing.

You know the GP Works, the most awesome R53 - it also has no trade or retail and a year ago I had to offer a GP Works client R95 000 for a car which he sold privately for about R240 000.

But hey, what do I know. :blab:

Just make sure motorplan is still valid. Mini's motorplan is 3 years/75000km and BMW is 5 years/100000km. Can be extended but only before it expires.

Just watch out for timing chain tensioner issues and steering rack. They both tend to give problems and cost quite a packet to repair.

@MiniMike Thanks champ! Been my dream car since the clubman was launched.

When I found her in this colour, I dropped everything and went MAD :bangdesk:...

I am a huge Clubman Fan, it truly is "the other MINI".

I think it has a better ride, handles better and its somewhat practical, yours looks well specced!

I still wish I could get my paws on a JCW Clubman, I know the GM of MINI SA has a red one. :inlove:

Thats MAD! I have never seen a Clubman JCW ever! Was it a standard model or the add-on JCW Kit?

The only thing she is missing which I would have liked is HID's. I find that the lighting on the standard headlamps is not very good.

I must say that the Clubman is much more balanced on the road dude to the extended wheelbase. She absorbs bumps way better that the standard MINI's I have driven.

I only got to drive it off the truck and park it in the front when she came on holiday to Cape Town, its a factory full spec car. :argh:

If you want HID's you can get an HID Kit from Rolf at Promotec.

For actual xenons its a bit more complicated, you need the levelers, washers and actual lights with coding. :nonono:

Coding is needed as the wipers need to activate the washers to spray every first time you use the xenons.

Damn MiniMike, should have spoken to you! Paid R175k for my 08 MCS, 50k on the clock but a full list of extras. Cheapest JCW I could find was R220k, just out of my range
