Hi

Looking for a light on fuel, trustfull bmw again. Budget R60 000 - R70 000.

I had a e36 316i and 525iM...

Any help on whats the best to get? Was looking at 320d...but im so afraid of turbos on 2002- 2003 ones....and 330d are not much for sale...i tried a few online shops....is 1 or 2 330d on autotrader..but no SH with it...few 2001-2003 320d , but im afraid lol....

1st option is 330d, then 320d...then u must say whats best after that....
Any tips?

Why not test drive?

Plenty 330d's out there. Take one for a drive and see what you think. You'll fall in love with the power.

Your second pic there is actually the m-sport version designed for the E46, and so yes you most certainly can fit that one to the car, provided you have the multifunction steering already.

What's the mileage on the car?

Stay away. My advice is that no one out there can "recon" a turbo. The story more often than not ends in tears. They either fit a Chinese imported turbo or internals either which can't hold up 5000km.

Only find one that has had an original turbo replacement. Or one that hasn't had a turbo replacement at all and has been cared for.

The 330d is superior to the 320d in many ways. However in that price range they all need a fair amount of love to get into good shape. The 5 series tends to be driven more sensibly and they age better for it. So don't rule out a 530d either.

Seeing as you're not that mechanically inclined drive someone's 330d that is in decent shape to set a benchmark. Drive others and you'll know what you get :)

I am assuming that the quoted poster like me also thought you are not mechanically inclined due to the kind of advice you are asking for.

No offense intended but as a mechanic you should probably know about some of the warning flags these guys are pointing out?

Where did you do apprenticeship. More so when?
