Llew's F10 M5

Small update

Been quite busy both with business and being offered jobs where businesses want to hire me based on the work I've been doing

:roflol:

Anyway

Here is a shot of ceramic coated tyres (Gyeon Tire Q2). Will report back on longevity. You use a hairdryer to cure the product onto the tyre.

You can see that it is actually quite unique in that you can't "see" any silicone/coating at all. I love the finish.

I am also thinking of adding a garage mate and I've been looking at some options.

Of course I can't stretch to this particular GT2 with Weissach package on it.. not yet anyway... but it is definitely a garage goal!

Also looked at the Supra which was a bit of a mixed bag. Ultimate the M2C at nearly 100K cheaper than the Supra for a new one (from ABM anyway) is the better choice. Toyota should probably have built the Supra on that instead...

Those wheels looked amazing, I feel these suit the F10 M5 best compared to the others. You still got them ?

Decided that it was time for colder heat range plugs recommended for the tune:

Enlisted some expert help and my garage was once again alive (for the first time this year I think) with the sounds of tools and dropping fasteners into tiny nooks and crannies.

My detailing light made things a lot easier

Intakes, DMEs and the "bridge" that the DME's sit on (with a ground strap on each side) are removed giving access to the coil packs. It is all quite simple.

There was no evidence of excessive or pooling oil in the intake tract and plugs were not oily or wet, which is a good sign

Bosch double platinum stock plug was swapped for NGK Laser Iridiums in a colder heat range

Even with a relatively simple job like this it is always good to hit that start button and have all 8 cylinders fire up first time with no unexpected issues LOL

Thank you everyone who responded to my thread... even the scammers... and even those who did not read the ad and offered me what I specifically said I didn't want LOL

I ended up going with drop-in filters from BMC and I will add AFE scoops at a later stage. The scoops are the real 'helper' in this equation it seems. I can't bring myself to pay R15K for BMS exposed filters with half your OEM bits still used (and still need to get scoops) and I have yet to win the lotto, so 40K odd for Eventuri is not going to happen anytime soon.

Autostyle has these at VERY good pricing. I often overlook Autostyle but another fanatic pointed me in that direction and I was pleasantly surprised by their responsiveness and how quickly they got it to me (overnight via TCG). They are also not old stock items - mine was produced August last year. I did get very good pricing from Deago on stock filters, but it made sense to at least try this route. The vast majority of people have not had issues with the MAF (and where they do it is after cleaning and oiling themselves leading to too much oil OR oiling the 'pre-oiled' filter further when installing new).

I fitted these while on a call actually - super easy - there is one T25 torx screw on each side that is an inconvenience but if you have a flexible screwdriver attachment or short-reach ratchet it isn't bad at all.

You just need a flathead screwdriver, the T25 bit and suitable drivers

Thanks for watching. You will find me doing a few more DIYs and small upgrades in coming months too.

The big question, any notable difference? And what do these cost at autostyle? I also used the BMC drop in filters for one of my cabs as well.

In sound yes surprisingly. Not alot over the akra/downpipe combo lol but deeper when youre eg next to a wall and on the throttle. Power? Do you notice a 5hp difference with a 700hp car? Truth is you can't.

R1750

OEM is about R800 but not reusable.

Thats looking nice Llew! I just like the filter colour change as well ha ha!

Tell me though, you mentioned AFE scoops...I have tried to look around for more research on them as I was offered a brand new one landed for F-series for around R1500.
But I cannot find much good info, plenty of overseas guys have very mixed results of it...can you share any of your opinion on these please?

Please share source at R1500. You can PM me. Yes they do make a difference (as far as I can tell and on  the M5) but it is tough if not impossible to measure on a dyno with the fan location and speeds. There is an Eventuri video showing the airflow into the engine bay using scoops and without scoops. Same goes for those crazy intakes that end up behind the kidney grilles - you see the benefits at speed apparently.

Shot man thanks! The okes who brought it in went for the "intake behind the grille" before this thing landed so he told me to take it for R1500, the total cost to bring it in landed. Its a black one, i'll try find that Eventuri vid to check it out

A bit of an update here:

I had two rather irritating issues that were not serious enough for me to sort out immediately and it is normally worthwhile to plan these things if possible to get the most out of labour charges. One was an oil leak from the turbo oil feeds and the other was a coolant leak. Both of these were extremely slow and tiny. What was irritating was that I had started to smell the oil faintly which is a pet hate of mine, particularly on a car like the M5... burning Rubber? Fuel? Hot Brakes? No problem! Oil and coolant is almost embarrassing!!

BMW Bryanston had suggested I bring it in to properly diagnose these during the last trip there, but I simply haven't used the car enough nor had the time since then. There were a few preventative items that I wanted to tackle so collected a few of these to do as a mini project so that I could pre-order all the parts, leave the car with the workshop for a week and collect it ready for another set of happy miles.

There were also instructions to inspect everything in the general area that might need replacement as well as the DCT transmission. They pressure tested the cooling system and identified two spots (in the process identifying another oil leak as well).

This is one of the larger bills I have had (but when you get into it you will see why), but still only around half of one F90 instalment in total, so I can't complain LOL. It could have been a lot worse: If any of you follow Legit Street Cars on Youtube you might have seen his video of the SL65 repair (engine out and apart) to replace a part that seems to perform a very similar function "completing" some of the channels within the block! This is one of those R1000 parts and R7000 labour scenarios. I think many people would probably have just lived with the leak behind the block, but the car has looked after me so well these past 6 or 7 years that I couldn't bring myself not to make sure everything was done properly. JSN/BMW Bryanston also came to the party with good pricing on the 'package' of work.

Of course this is a good opportunity to inspect the flywheel and make sure the gearbox is not leaking anything...

I will update with the 'top side' pics as well when the car is on the ground again.

One of the points that was leaking fluid was the hose close to the temperature sensor. This is a different failure point to the normal rubber hoses at the top of the motor, close to the turbos. I opted to replace the lines, the rad hoses and the sensor - probably overkill, but the parts pricing made it a no-brainer to just do this all at once and not chase down issues later on.

I also changed out the power steering reservoir which has been sweating for years now - it gets wiped clean when I clean the engine bay, but I really just wanted to have this one done and this was an opportunity to do so.

The 'main leak' and source of the smell was actually at the turbo oil feeds. These are apparently O rings that needed to be replaced.

Will post another update soon.

EDIT: Few extra pics of the new parts - Various coolant hoses, clamps, a sensor, the cover, some fluids etc.

The journey has come to an end for me with my beloved M5 off to a new owner. He is going to remain anonymous for now but is on the forum so it stays 'in the family' somewhat. Suffice it to say, it was an offer I could not refuse and everything has a price. After nearly 7 years and 100000km of joy, the car really reignited my love and passion for BMW which had been lost between my E36 days and the then 'current era' of cars.

What started as an affair turned into a rather long term relationship and it is only very recently that the 'itch' set in for something different. The 4C is a capable track car and to be honest, a daily too - but it is NOT a grand tourer by any means. I had not made a decision to sell or advertised the car anywhere and it was one of those 'too good to be true' offers that I never thought would actually pan out when push came to shove.

The likelihood of me buying any of the new generations of M are quite low except for the F90 but I am keeping my options open. Still have to try out the G80. You will still find me on here regularly and I will gladly help ANYONE on here to acquire their own V8TT F10/12/13 beast. Just reach out.
