Congrats man! 957's are the absolute business, loved mine so much. Just hated the 3.6 VR6 fuel consumption :ROFLMAO: if I manage to find the right diesel 957 I will absolutely get another.

Wishing you many happy kilometers!

Got a cabin filter and air filter from Goldwagen for a rather low price the other day and did them both in about 30 mins (including me investigating the areas around them LOL). This would have been a (believe it or not) R4400 job, (nearly half of it being labour). Go figure

Anyway it seems both were not too bad (certainly not vs. what I'd seen in videos online) and were probably changed fairly recently. Sorry I had the bright idea of taking pics after I'd installed the cabin filter. Anyway R585 vs. R4400 ain't bad

Car didn't have a spare wheel so I sourced one via Facebook marketplace as well as a few items missing from my toolkit.

I did a basic decontamination wash with a mix of Gyeon APC + Gyeon Foam followed by Gyeon Iron

While fiddling around the cabin filter, it became VERY obvious the carpets were in need of attention next:

I hit these with a pressure washer, Gyeon APC sprayed onto them followed by a drill brush and further pressure washing. The pics don't really convey how crusty they were before.

Following this, I used a 1:20 dilution of TurtleWax Pro Interior 1 in my Karcher Puzzi. Note that you can rent this machine from some Spar stores! I found this dilution to work well for the heavy soiling while not producing too much foam which becomes a problem to manage with the machine.

Extract until the colours stop, and then final extractions were done with normal water. I also did the carpets inside including the carpet on the door cards. These don't really capture well in pics, but here is a side by side of the spare wheel cover

So how dirty were they?

The good news is that being a high quality, thick pile carpet, it cleaned up very nicely and could handle all the abrasive and chemical processes to get it back to 'decent' (I feel like I will still need a few goes at this over time but it's fine for now LOL

Congrats Llew!
I never took you for someone who would be so adventurous with their car choice. This is awesome!
Also a big congrats is in order for choosing a car so much lower the price range that the misses is still happy with

What a cool thread so far

Dirty Jobs, but great outcome.

I think interiors are generally the most neglected / overlooked areas of cleaning a vehicle. Even the usual weekly surface cleaning is minimal.

Proper deep cleaning as you have done sure elevates things inside, but can be cringe-worthy at the same time, lol.

Spot on: I am 110% sure many perfectly clean looking, regularly vacuumed cars will produce similar levels of grime/dirt! It's the same with home carpets as well. They can look pristine, but you don't know until you lift them or have them deep cleaned!

The 'high cholesterol' of detailing :ROFLMAO:

The lower price range was almost by-design since the Mrs was anxious about dogs and stuff in 'her' R1M+ car and I think we were both anxious about paying that for a car that is on one hand almost purely utility for us, but on the other hand depreciating through the floor. There were no concerns with dogs in 'my' R1M+ car BTW :ROFLMAO:. In terms of roadside assist etc I've always ALSO had an AA membership over and above Mercedes, BMW or other services.

The platform appears to be fairly robust as well which helped. Quite a few of my neighbours have these (and the prior 955). An active community is always a good sign and it seems other fanatics also have fond memories of it which is good to hear!

TBH the Mrs is happy in that everything inside is electric, working and she still has her 'luxury feel' of sorts. Fuel isn't really a thing for us as she is 100% home based and the school is very close to home. She is not one who uses driver aids (famously she drives long distances in the F90 with zero aids as she 'wants to feel the car' :ROFLMAO:) and she also doesn't use tech at all... even in her merc, it was my devices connected to it :ROFLMAO:. As long as the radio works she is fine. No auto parking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise etc.

As for the V6 choice on one hand it was just because it became available at the time, but also I don't know if I will have a non-turbo petrol car again in future, or one without a screen instead of a dashboard for that matter! I did like the noise. If you can do a few things yourself it seems that this platform is also pretty cost effective with only that centre carrier bearing being a bit of a red flag. These had half-been on my radar already.

That said, this 'saving' is going to almost entirely offset by what's coming (hopefully sooner rather than later) :ROFLMAO:

The way the market is at the moment you either have these kinds of things where people have their own ideas of what it will be like from a cost perspective and they are probably 'fairly' priced... at about double the price you can get a 'sorted' x20d or x30d but the problem is that it is not going to be well specced. I had complaints about cars I'd found or suggested having eg: manual seats for instance. By the time you find those unicorns with the right spec you are at the base of the F15s because they are (rightly so) in demand... and again by the time you find a nice one of those (and they ALL will still need some kind of work and will STILL depreciate further) you're into entry G territory and spending R1M for something that then will run out of plan before you have completed enough years of ownership to have paid it off. There are no appetising new SUVs outside of maybe getting a Bentayga or X5M or X3M Comp. Even then, you have to live with those screens...

We always lament the state of the car market and this is the unfortunate end-game (for me anyway). The new cars are affected by depreciation at pre-covid rates once again (ie: back to normal, even if retail market pricing is still high). Go and see what heart breaker trade in offers many will get. The plus side is that if we did hypothetically need to trade on something else or the time came for it to go, a dealer would probably give you more than enough in deal assistance and trade value to make it work vs. (most likely) loading money from another financed car where you're also on the back foot, having to get out of the previous mess before getting into the next so to speak. (ie: I can see a situation where the 'loaded' amount on a car that we didn't even really want, might be more than the TCO of this car)

I do feel though that I will keep this one for some time to come!
