Keep car and tune vs New car

Hi :)

I'm in 2 minds whether to keep or sell my car.

I have a 2007 330i with 70k still in mplan.

I am considering a 135/335 2007 or 2008 (can't afford 2009+ for now)

I can get a reasonable price for my car at the moment and won't lose too much but should I keep it I'm sure ill lose quite a lot from next year or so.

I'm a student and work part time so money isn't flush should something go wrong after motorplan is finished.

I hear that the N52 motors are reliable (touch wood) and don't mind keeping this car after motorplan is finished. I wouldn't like to have an N54 after motorplan though.

I am considering getting BMW performance intake, exhaust and possibly software. I know I'm not going to get huge gains but should I keep the car I would like to add these.

I am just looking for any opinions or advice regarding my situation.

Thank you

David :)

Take the 335i. I've had my BMW 323i out of motorplan for 7 years and have never had problems with the car, just keep it maintained and do your yearly services and she'll be good to go.

No point tuning the 330i. If you really want power out of it, you're going to be spending more than you would if you just bought the 335i. Also, reliability goes out the window once you start doing heavy mods.

Be smart, buy the 335i and have a reliable fast car.

wanting 335, student, part time employed, not flush with cash, does not compute

Needless to say i will say X35 but also bear in mind these cars have issues. If you prepared to deal with that , then close your eyes and N54 FTW.

:thumbdo: seriously guys - you are a student! dont waste your money on another car unless this one is costing you money.

I can see why people are getting into so much debt - there is a lack of concience. :fencelook:

Debt? What Debt? I bought my M3 cash?

If the guy can afford it, let him... Obviously my original comment is only valid if you can afford the car. He said he cannot afford 2009+, which means he can afford 2007/2008.

My advice was purely aimed at this fact. If you can afford the car, buy the 335i, sell the 330i, DO NOT MOD. You will not get many gains on 330i unless you do forced induction and engine internal mods/diffs, which as I stated, reduce reliability depending on where he gets it done. Also, this will in the end, cost more than if he just traded the 330i in and bought a good looking 335i.

Now, if you cannot afford the 335i... then don't do anything... save up.

i was thinking of a similar thing, having to work full time next year I was thinking of selling the 320d and finding a clean second hand 335 with a bit of MP next year as MP expires end of the year (this is considering that I could get an interest free loan on the difference as well)..but then I looked at the way I serviced the 320d, which is practically a new car with a new diff, box, and a whole lot more not even a year old and thought well whats the point in selling a car I know has been looked after well and maintenance will exist but alot of the major things have been sorted..it all depends on your situation but rather think of working and investing from early rather than spending on a car that will lose value anyway..whether you spend on a new car or keep the current car, both lose value anyway..just my 2 cents, GL with the decision

Being able to "afford" a car, and afford a car are two different things.

You can't assume that a car is reliable - if you buy it out of MP, you should be in a position where you can pay for repairs without breaking the bank, or pulling together a loan. The car may never fail you, but you might also end up with a lemon.

I don't think that any of it really makes sense until you have a permanent job, and can afford both your needs and your wants without going into bundles of debt.

what is your part time job, I work full time and cant afford a 335i

That comment killed me:)

I say donate the 330i to me and ask yr folks for a little extra cash for your 335....tell them you just lost the car somewhere.

Its a win win situation:thumbs:

But seriously....stop wasting money, use up the motor plan, then decide if a new car is really necessary. Its not like the 330 is slow.

if you getting an x35i 2007 or 2008 chances are its almost out of mp. i would consider it a risky purchase especially if you are going to tune it and its your daily drive. all depends on your finances. good luck with decision

Thanks for all the replies - appreciate them!

@ SAbertooth - almost 2 years and 25000km

@ Rooi_Willie - will have to put in about 100k so it's quite a bit

@ Crash - appreciate the advice ;-)

@ Kabal and MikeR - I owe nothing on the car and will pay the difference in cash. I finish my studying this year and start articles next year (already signed) and I don't have a hole in my wallet (a wife) so it's not like I'm killing myself if I were to get this car.

@ Wacko - dream garage of cars you got there! Nice !!

@ Bayn - it will have motorplan if I were to buy it but I do quite a bit of driving and will probably run out of plan while I still have it. By that time I should be in 2nd or 3rd year of articles so I should be able to afford another car.

@ Novio - I wish my parents helped me out bud

My decision at the moment is that if I can sell my car and a good one comes along (low milege 08) then ill go X35, if not I'm happy with my car and it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive.

The main reason why I actually want and x35 is that my brother has an M3 and all his cars have been faster than my cars for long enough now :tease:
