I think people didn't know what to expect from the Z8. I think it was intended to be more of a cruiser with an awesome engine rather than a nimble roadster. Personally, I love it.
Also Top Gear is just for lulz.

The comments comming out of the Top Gear twats mouth's hold absolutely no value in my world.I just watch it to see the latest cars. Its like skipping through a book and looking only at the pictures to me.
He is incredibly biased. Everytime Porsche makes a car, "it doesn't have soul and thats why the Lambo/Ferrari is better". Despite the Porsche being faster cheaper more reliable and more practical.

In the same breath, you cannot deny, that son of a gun is entertaining as hell. You gotta love him

Granted and most definitely, their program is more entertainment focused than actual car reviewing, and a lot of the time their biased opinions overlook the true merit and strengths of the cars they test. "So in conclusion we hate this car, and on that bombshell..."

And another thing to remember, they usually favour petrol head pleasure and perfection rather than practically or affordability, hence why they almost always refer to diesel cars as using the fuel of satan, or something along those lines. So one has to take what they say with a pinch of salt, but sometimes I reckon what they say, in between all the nonsense, does make sense. And often this is as relevant as what a person sees a car as being - so while maybe the Z8 has terrible handling and seems almost uncontrollable on a track when being pushed, as a car for the average normal sensible person it is most likely a suburb and solid car.

For instance, I am not a Ferrari fan because I reckon it won't take much driving on our typical roads to stuff one up easily - whereas a typical Porsche is a whole other animal, so much more practical and usable, and in most cases a lot more affordable to own and use. Who cares if their 911 design has not really changed much throughout the years in terms of styling, these cars are able to put their power down extremely well!

All I can say is I have always loved this car. And to see it in the flesh was just awesome. It is really beautiful!! So unique. Had German / Euro plates and was left hand drive. Owner was well spoken english, and was very chuffed for the recognition. I can still SHOOT myself for not insisting he joins us on the forum. A Fanatics bizz card would have come in tops here. Dang I'm a tool...I'm gonna be hunting for this car when I drive in town again...stalking it....one of only 2 in SA...I'm a doos...Keep an eye out chaps...he will pop up again...

Unfortunetly second hand prices for these cars are sky high. Proving Top Gear wrong...

I believe they were only left hand drive as well?

The car was also designed for the American market... so straight line speed and being able to lay down two solid black stripes on pull away are all that matters.

Pity they cut it in half.

My favourite though besides the Aston Martini chase in Die Another Day:

It was meant to rekindle the 508

I think you meant the 507.

TBH, I like the old Z8 better

If I could have only one car... it would be a 250GTO, then sell that car and buy a 507 and some other BMWs

The Z8 was made as a nod to the 507 built between 1956 and 1959. The 507 was also a commercial failure even though Elvis and Surtees owned one. Only 254 were made, but today it is one of the most sought after BMW's and commands serious money. The E52 Z8 was made between 2000 and 2003 and used the S62 V8 engine from the E39 M5. Although it had a starring role in the Bond film The World is not Enough, it also turned out to be a commercial failure of sorts, with only 5703 being made, bearing in mind it was never meant to be a volume seller. I have seen a few at BMW in Germany, and it does have a certain retro charm I find quite appealing. Prices are on the up, so classic status is guarenteed. There are two in Cape Town as far as I know, one in silver, and one in an odd olive green colour. I have seen, and touched, both cars. Unfortunately I have never met the owners. Both have German plates, and yes, these cars were only available in left hand drive.
