Jezebel Engine Rebuild... Part 2

Ok. Got the new head. But there are some issues that need to be sorted out.

Firstly, the shims need to be done on it and it seems like most shops that do M3 heads are closed or are too busy. So I might have to sit with this thing till next year.

What a ballache.

Also, it being a reconned head, I'm taking no chances and am going to have to also get it pressure tested to make sure there are no cracks in the head.

Gonna go get that done tomorrow.

Wish me luck guys...

If the head does have a crack, its back to the old head... =(

Long day. I'm tired and confused. I hope this was the right choice.

Crash, if u don't mind me asking, so if the reconditioned head needs some work, why not wait 4the parts to come through from vac? You've already outlayed the cash 4the parts as well as paid 4what was done to the original head, so why not wait it out and save yourself some cash?

This will be quite the xmas gift to yourself. It's just going to be hard to not spend too much 'dorra' in the given timespan to get it all together again. Holding thumbs!

Naming cars is bad....It has a name. "BMW E46 ///M3" <----its a good name it works and it doesn't cause shit.

I think the car is pissed at you for farking with its name! Going from a German Precision Name like BMW E46 ///M3 to a frikken Kittens name isn't doing this car any justice lol

Hey German Spec,

It doesn't really need work. Every head needs to be shimmed for clearance on the valves. I am doing this to be 100% sure this engine is perfect. I could easily just slap the head on as it is today, and they car may work fine, but I'd rather take the extra time and money just to make sure.

I swapped out the other head because I was not 100% comfortable with it. When it dropped a valve, we are not sure if its because the shims were placed in incorrectly, which is not Sav's style, or whether there was another issue, like a spring that's not within tolerance, of if a rocker arm is defective. It could have been the retainer that was holding the valve that was defective, there are so many variables.

Also, the fact that the head was welded back together wasn't a 100% comforting.

So I decided to take the leap and replace the head with another one that has a guarantee. The head I repaired, does not have a guarantee, which is bullshit, but what can I do. This car industry here is cut throat and unfortunately people have to look out for themselves it seems.

in the end, the new head sounded like a better idea. It has no welding, it has cams, springs, valves, retainers and is in good shape. Look at the photos below.

how can they repair the head then say it will work but not give you a guarantee :nonono: if they were confident in their work they would give you a guarantee...

seems you most defiantly did the right thing by getting a new head...

This is exactly what I was talking about earlier when I said mechanics work is phases once they fuck up and you pick up on it, See they know they fucked up and they just don't give a shit, and when you confront them about it they start the sabotage phase and stuffing your engine block up and not offering a guarantee is to me blatant sabotage! I hope you did not pay them for that work???

Ok.. Even more good news.

I bought the head from IPC. They deal in BMW guaranteed OEM parts and have hundreds of parts for any BMW. I was invited to come into their warehouse and man, the amount of parts in there was awesome.

They had a fully ready V8 M3 engine sitting and waiting for someone to take it. Another e46 S54 Engine sitting and waiting. Even had a 335 N54 Engine and turbo just sitting there.

Anyway, I voiced my concerns on the valve clearance with the head and they offered to send the head to their official dude who does their heads and get the head shimmed and clearances checked.... for FREE...

So the head is now on its way to get shimmed and make sure the clearances are 100%. Also, they showed me that the head did have pressure tests done and passed all the tests. The head is fine.

So, it cost me a little bit more in the end, but this head is the better choice.

I hopefully get it back this week and can get Jezebel back on the road next week.

An end to this 4 month long nightmare.

SO DO I!!! You guys have no idea...

I buy an M3, drive it for the first 5 days, leave it with sav for a week to get valves sorted, get it the next week but unfortunately have to go down to Cape Town for 6 days to do a film shoot, I get back fromt the film shoot only to have the valve drop four days later... I only ever drove her for a total of 10 days.

This was so unfair, but I'm pushing through it.
