Japan! On a budget?

Howzit guys,

I really want to go to Japan for around 7-10 days. I don't have to see the whole country but will like to experience a good combination of the city and countryside.
Now I'v got a good reason to spend a lot of money on a holiday in May next year but I've heard that Japan is just too expensive?

Does anyone know if it will be possible to enjoy Japan for a week for around R35k per person?

I envy you. Japan is on my bucket list for sure!

But, from what I know, R35k will be extremely tight, if not impossible.

Definitely keen to see what suggestions you get!

Good luck man...

Oh hell yes! in fact most South East Asian countries are a pretty good party for that budget... and if you 'suffer' from a bit of yellow fever like me... even a bigger party!

Best thing for a first time traveller there would be to go via a tour group where accommodation and food is looked after.

IT is extremely expensive to stay in hotels there and to eat out. If you aren't in the "know-how" regarding where locals eat etc. you're going to be paying hectic prices.

I recently priced some travels on my own to compare to some quotes I got, it was not worth the effort in the price difference, the travel agencies actually gave me some good prices.

Best prices I got from these guys www.andgo.com

Best option really. A week in a foreign country is sadly not enough.

I spend 2 weeks in brisbane and all I saw was the river, surfers paradise and a lot of city.

Have you checked with Flight centre?
At least you can get a ball park figure from them and they can plan the holiday.
i had a quick look, flights are around the R12k mark return, that leaves you with R23k pp to see Tokyo.

It can be done, book tickets with travel start and book accommodation via Booking.com ... Should even have some change left over...

I generally find this to be the cheaper option. But i usually use an itinerary and costing provided by Flight Centre/Thompsons as a starting point :fencelook:

I do it on my own.

I use Voyager miles to get free/upgraded tickets (which you can't do via the tour guys), and then have found that I am generally able to get better rooms (sea facing/city-scape facing, deluxe, etc.) for the same price that the package deals tend to get (which invariably are the garden facing/building site facing basement room)...

A little bit of effort (not much) and it's also part of the fun of learning about a new place and getting personally involved in the bookings, etc.

I always make use of TripAdvisor to get insights and help chose places...

Japan is just notoriously expensive... despite the above...

I was in Japan for 2 weeks a few years ago. Its amazing. Spend loads of time in Kyoto, its a magical place. And if youre into otaku things, akihabara is amazing. Tokyo is cool, but expensive and not really as memorable as a few of the more traditional places.

I went 5 years back and I would love to go back again, it's unbelievable.

It is super pricey though and 35k inclusive of flights and accommodation won't happen unless you not really someone that needs spending money.
Tourist spots are easily as expensive as Paris and NYC and there is so much to see there that you would have to curb yourself, a lot.
