So, as many of you know, my e46 M3 needs to be rebuilt.

The engine was pulled after the car suffered loss in compression and massive oil leaks and smell of fuel. The car drove like absolute shit, often backfiring and shooting massive flames out the exhaust, as well as pushing oil out the tappet cover gasket and oil catch can due to the mass amount of pressure in the crank case due to compression loss.

The damage.

The solution.

The block is damaged beyond repair. A new block has been sourced.

I will be importing 6 new CP forged pistons - https://store.vacmotorsports.com/cp-carrillo-forged-piston-set-bmw-s54-p2042.aspx

New ARP L19 studs.

New Vac motorsports coated Main end and rod bearings - https://store.vacmotorsports.com/vac-performance-coated-rod-bearing-set-bmw-s54-p1336.aspx
https://store.vacmotorsports.com/vac-high-performance-main-bearing-set-s54-p2050.aspx

Here is the bearing set -

The Vac motorsports Torque plate has arrived, we will be using it when we bore out the S54 block to 87.5mm.

The last rebuild did not use a torque plate, even though I insisted that one should be used, after calling JB engineering, I have learned that JB engineering do not own or use a torque plate when boring out or honing engine blocks.

Please see this video for more info on why a torque plate is used - (go to 6 minutes for the explanation into why a torque plate is used)

Parts that survived the engine failure that I can still use.

My Vac Motorsports stage one cylinder head is still fine, so we will keep all the parts from the Cylinder head. This includes the Vac Motorsports racing valves and single groove cotters.

The HPF (Crower) titanium connecting rods are fine. We will be using them on the build.

A Vac motorsports uprated oil pump internals will be used aswell.

More info to come. Stand by.
Hi Crash you real commented is there a supercharger in the back ground good stuff man. Build that dream again I'm sure it will last this time around.

Thank you ggrobler, I appreciate the support and yes, that is a Vortech V3 Supercharger (blacked out Stealth look) in the background.

good luck man i genuinely hope it all works out! personally i would of boosted it on stock bore but you're doing it right & should work!

Good luck this time!

One question: Why are you increasing the bore? i can't see the advantage in the moment....

AndreasSA, the only reason why the bore is increased is to ensure perfectly round cylinders. As great as BMW is, these blocks are mass produced and thus do not have perfectly round cylinders when they are cast. The pistons I am using are forged and all weigh identically the same and are identical in size. Identical in every way as they are machine cut to fit 100% snug into a perfectly round 87.5 bore.

A 2nd hand block will no doubt be nowhere near perfectly round. Installing normal 87mm pistons will work, but by boring out to 87.5 and using CP pistons honing pattern with the Chrome moly piston rings, we get a perfect 100% seal which increases reliability and gives the engine better compression. Call me an over achiever, but I want a proper blueprinted and balanced engine, like the one I originally had in this car back in 2012. That engine that blew my mind. I cannot even begin to explain the difference between a well built and balanced engine compared to a factory S54. It is like night and day. The engine revs up so freely and fast.

One can expect compression of the engine to be 165 -175+ through all the cylinders using this technique for years to come if done correctly.

This is why we bore out.

Good luck with the build boy, pity it has to happen again. I just can't believe how fast that type of damage happens .... :blueCry:

Pistons and bearings paid for and on their way from Vac Motorsports. Thought I'd wait a few weeks to see if the rand would get better but it hasn't. So it wasn't cheap thanks to the rand dollar exchange.
