Guys,

Simple question:

2005 E46 M3 with 48000km on the clock. Car is like new! I meant that, its been owned from new by a CEO of a very big SA company.

Could it possible be worth R280k ? I am tempted, but will I ever see my money again ?

Nope. Will never see you money again unless you garage it and detail it daily.
It will become an icon, but are you OD'ing to hang on for long enough? If you could get it at R220k I would say yes. But I may be wrong

Low mileage M3 prices are climbing steadily. Will you see your money again - probably if you're patient and keep the mileage low.

Another way to look at this: What else can you get for that price range. Used 335i, 330d, etc. All will depreciate much, much quicker.

BTW, low mileage does not automatically translate into a "healthy" M car, so have the car checked out properly too.

How's the spec? If it's a poverty spec car, that's a bit of a rip-off... and you know full well you're going to clock mileage on this car, so it will lose value.

Honestly, for that kind of money (probably R260k realistically), I'd buy this one:

SoulBlade's old car before he got his Z4M... meticulously cared for and made some very good power. Nicely specced as well, barring the absence of navigation.

It's obviously in great condition but the price is too high for the car itself I'm not saying its a shit car just referring to comparing it to something with a bit more mileage or a 335).
If you look at one with 20-30k more in km in the same condition, you're still getting a brilliant car. I tend to like the low mileage aspect of a car, keeping in mind it in an M and is made to be driven so it would be a very good buy.

If you could get it for R240k, then I'd say you're getting a great deal.

Thank you all for your help as usual.... I have decided against the car. It would look stunning at the garage, but my bank balance would look empty.

The good thing about the E46 M3 is that the engine in that car is probably one of BMW's finest moments. It is a rock solid unit that very rarely gives kak, as you can tell by the lack of technical inquiries on this forum.
However, when you have a highly tuned engine it DOES need to be driven, otherwise the parts are not stressed enough, if that makes sense.
I will use the Audinary RS4 as an example. That car was made to be clouted often, and if it wasn't, there was hectic carbon buildup on the valves and components started giving issues. Please don't get me wrong, I am not for one moment comparing the M3 to the RS4 in this regard, I am merely trying to illustrate a point. Ask the owner if he HAS driven the car hard and how often. It's a simple question and one he should be honest about, not because you are trying to catch him out, but because it makes sense that an M3 is caned on occasion.
In my opinion you will never go wrong with one of these cars, no matter the age or the mileage, it is simply a magnificent motor vehicle that pushes all the right emotive buttons. Getting one with low mileage is awesome. Just don't turn it into a museum piece or rack up hectic mileage. A stunning example one will fetch good money one day. If I had some moola lying around,I would be adding one of these to my garage.

So this question is based on the car history in your sig :) Are you buying it to experience it and sell it soon or buying it to keep it as a collectors piece? (or are you buying it to supercharge it and do all sorts of wild n wacky things to it?)
If you're only going to hold for a couple of years or mod it, you're definitely not going to see your money, but if you keep it for a bit and look after it, you may not get your whole R280k back, but you could probably still get R200k+ for it in a few years... and wow...how mint does that 1 look in CPT!! That CEO really looked after it!

I never buy a car think how much I will get back from it, biggest lost that I can remember was on a 120i BMW, lost R 61000 in 11 months when I traded in. Just buy it because you want it and stress for a week or two:fencelook:

Buying a ///M car is always a heart over head decision

Without a doubt.....but it's something you HAVE to do once in your life....

As far as losing money on a car....try R100k on an RS4....ouch!
