Is this legal in SA?

I have been reading the National traffic laws on how number plates must be presented and attached on vehicles and I cannot find anything that says this is illegal but with JMPD anything is a "drink" issue.

Is this legal?

I dont think this should be an issue, as long as it is attached and in some sort of license plate holder.

remember a few years ago the Alfa 156 and a few modern ones have a offset number plate, no issues with the cops then.

Yes even the 159 has the plate that side as well and the Guilleta... according to a police friend the number plate needs to be on drivers side of the car they its all good.

These setups are as per OEM spec, though. Cops can't do anything about those.

I think the OP wants to know what the implications would be like on a car like a BMW which has no OEM setup for plates off-centre.

Only thing cops ever gave me slack about is if the number pate is not 100% visible or obscured in any way (tow bar in the way, plate at an angle, dirt hiding some digits etc), and if its not an SABS approved plate

Never seen a cop give anyone issues about that , my friend has a 159 and his plate is like that , I understand the Alfa cars have it like that because its done like that from factory . but I personally think it looks stupid on a car that should have its plate in the center , It looks so off to me .

I bought an RS3 grill from the US and there is no place to mount a number plate on it only saw this when it arrived... besides I think AUDI grills look nice without plates

Depends where you are...

JHB I had this on my STI with velcro only. No plate holder or anything. Stopped MANY times (as is normal when you have a scooby) and never had any issues.

Durban cops will want to arrest you :roflol:

I have the same on my E36, never had shit from police about it. Although for the most part the front plate is usually off. In 16years of driving I have never been fined for not displaying a front plate, most cops overlook it and are more interested in the car than doing their job. So long as you are displaying one plate you are legal. It's all down to your approach, be super friendly and you won't get a ticket.

That's because the cops always hear that excuse, whether it's true or not. Same for the one: Oh it fell off and Im on my way to builders to get tape/rivets/whatever to reattach it. I have always been brutaly honest with them when they ask where my front plate is, I tell them it looks too ugly to be on the front of such a beautiful car, they end up agreeing with me and send me on my way.

and also its sometimes too much trouble to write out the ticket. Just make sure you dont have the plate in the boot cause otherwise they are gonna give you more grief.
