Is it worth installing software in a e90 330i

So im two minded about installing software in my 330i. Did some homework n I see there's only a power gain of 15-20bhp. Is this true or does it make a bigger difference?

It makes a big difference at the wheels with a de-cat and air filter, you're looking at another 20-25kw. I'm going to be doing mine early December... very excited. This is if you have a proper BMW tuner do it for you, I'm also based in Cape Town, i.e. taking altitude into account.

You also get much better throttle response which is a huge upside because the stock throttle response doesn't always keep up with your foot placement. So on a NA engine those are huge worthy gains.

20 - 25 kw.... i dunno about that.

Yea gains are to be debated, however the car will feel and sound more responsive.
I drove Dev's 330i and the throttle response was addictive to say the least.

I do...:hammerhead:
A club member has dyno graphs to prove it. You won't get those gains from someone who doesn't understand software properly.

if you dont mind me asking, what software is available for the E90 330i? and from where?
with regards to the exhaust, would a decat throw errors?

Many places, the one I'm refering to is ECU Expert.
You'll get errors and overfueling issues if you do the decat without the software. Thats why you do both on the same day, or you could do software first but its more fun to get all the gains on the same day :)

would the software assist with speedy gear changes (auto with peddle shift)

problem is I have over a year left of plan :smashScreen:

It does definitely effect the gearbox if you'd like it to, I don't know all the specifics you'd have to speak to the main guy at ECU Expert. I just recall him telling me if I got a 335i auto the gear changes would be much quicker if I'd like them to be after the software.

Frankly I don't see how the gear shifts would be faster unless they're tinkering with the gearbox's software, and I personally wouldn't be comfortable with that :dunno:

If you have an amateur doing it for you then yes, like 90% of the so called tuners. If you're in South Africa I doubt there's anyone better to go to. They do ECU repairs for BMW Africa and most German cars as far as I know.

I did custom branches and full exhaust and tune on a 130I and she was a beaut. Very good throttle response and acceleration. the noise, oh the noise :drool:
i think 25kw is optimistic though. maybe a 25kw gain because the car had blocked cats and wasnt performing properly, but 25kw on a healthy car thats breathing nicely is going to be difficult to achieve. that being said i hope you get those figures! in the Cape a 330 plus 25kw will be good fun!
Good luck with it, i hope you get the figures your promised, otherwise tune that tuner what hekse

Gearbox software is safe, when done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Sam1801 PM, will put you in touch with a good tuner in Durban.
