Intermittent Shudder on take off

Howsit Guys, Im experiencing intermittent shudder when taking off with the E46 at times.. The wife drives this car and was suspecting clutch..
It does not happen all the time. if you rev and take off, its fine.. It seems like the engine / gearbox shakes abit. Could it be the pressure plate or Gearbox mountings ? anyone experienced similar problems ?

Hi Guys at the moment I'm experiencing the exact same problem on my E46 320i. Noticed it a couple of weeks ago during peak hour-was a bit frustating. Pardon my ignorance what is the MAF? San please let me know if it helps in any case- Thanks

Is the shudder drive line based while the revs are up ?

If that is the case, its prob clutch and or pressure plate. It could be as well that you have a main seal leak, and your getting a bit of engine oil on the flywheel.

The only was to diagnose it is to strip and look. If you hear no other bumps or noises, it could very well be the clutch, but if you hear any knocking/shaking once driving, it could be a mount or a center bearing issue on the prob.

Dave from CBF should be able to diagnose.

I have the same thing on the E34, and I suspect it is because I did not skim the flywheel when I changed the clutch, so guess who is going to havta redo that one.... :(

Had the same problem on my E46. Turned out to be that BMW adjusted the Hand Brake a bit too much. Loosened it and it was fine.

Could also be the wheel speed sensors throwing incorrect signal

Thanks for the responses,
@ zaleonardz, the shudder is when you take off and only on first gear.
No oil leaks, so its not the rear main seal..
Will check the MAF, @ Jus Crusin, its the sensor on you airbox pipe to the intake.
I get a bit of a rattle noise at times when it does that.. so its probably one of the following, propshaft bearing, flywheel, pressure plate or the spacer that the propshaft bolts onto the Gearbox.. will jack it up this weekend and check.

my shudder i can feel its the engine & not any mountings & the fact that the mech said the MAF will prob need replacing sometime.. guess that time is now

I drove a e46 320i facelift a few years back and had something similiar. At the time, my driveway dipped slightly towards the garage, meaning that when I reverse, it was at a slight incline, and I would pick up a constant shudder. Replaced the clutch, and flywheel (thanks motorplan) and the shudder was gone.

I have experienced the same with my 318i e46, but only when hot. Complained to BMW (while still on motorplan) and they put in new gear box, clutch , etc. then it was fine.

Google CDV-clutch delay valve  You can remove this on some models or you can fit in a modified one in its place...problem solved

@San did you manage to sort your problem- really curious- my car has got the exact same problem. If you did what was the problem. @StK did you actually solve a problem with the CDV- and is it possible on my car. Thanks guys.

Didn't need to as I don't have one on my car..You do have one on your car....If you check this THREAD it'll tell you more about removing it...there are actually numerous threads about CDV on that site...

Mods I hope you don't mind me linking to that site :)

I had/have something similar on my 120d. Haven't experienced it for a while. Also seems to be an issue when the car is hot, as well as when driven in traffic. I read on another forum that in the UK, BMW acknowledged the fault and there was a software update. This made the engine idle at 1300 rpm, but caused more issues than it fixed. Probably easier doing a software upgrade than replacing numerous clutches and flywheels.

I've got the same issue on my 318i. I've decided to live with it as it doesn't get any better or worse and I don't want to replace the clutch at great expense and be left with the same problem. I will look into the MAF suggestion though.

Big Thanks StK. I'm definitely no expert but after reading that specific threads I think you are spot on with regard to the problem. Now I must just get it to someone that can do it for me- otherwise I will take it to the mech's that usually work on my car. Yes I know you guys think why I dont do it as a DIY, unfortunately I'm not mechanically inclined as most of you guys.

Ok problem solved, it was the clutch and pressure plate. Had BMW install a new clutch kit under warranty and the problem is solved... take off now is such a pleasure..
