Hi all,

Looking to buy my first BMW and need some advice please.

I'm looking at a 335i coupe. 2007 model. Couple of quick questions:

Manual or Auto/steptronic/tiptronic etc? Any issues with either one?
Anything specific to take note of or look out for when buying?
Car is just out of motorplan. How concerned should I be about maintenance?
General cost of services?
Anything else you think I need to know about these cars in general?

Your help will be much appreciated.

dont buy out of motorplan, costs will be heavy on maintenance,
the thing is there was issues on these year models and there was a recall,i have a 2008 model under motorplan,my engine and turbos had to be replaced at 57000km's complete job was +/-130k i would say spend a bit more and get 1 still in plan

From an SR20 to a N54......

you can get 07 model coupes for around the R300k mark, only real concerns are motorplans, there will be just 1 yr left, you can extend thou and you should cos u dont want to own a 335i out of MP.

Manual/Steptronic.... depends on your taste.

try to get a later model if you can, check the extras also, s/roof, msport pack etc...

Surely if there is a "recall" then it applies to all models and not just those in motorplan?

Hey Demonic. I'm keeping the SR20, but will be trading in the audi.

Do these cars really just lay down and die after motorplan? I do a lot of mileage so I don't really want to spend R100k more for a low mileage one which will be a high mileage one in a year or so.

The problem with these cars is the HPFP. Just keep that in mind and money in the bank to replace it when it dies. If you plan on keeping the car for a while, I would rather go for a manual, because no autobox lasts forever, and they are expensive to fix.

BMW does very little recalls (not because their cars are so fault-free, but rather because they don't admit their mistakes), and in SA, I don't know of any recalls on any models out of MP.

How much does the Fuel pump replacement cost generally?

Are Walbro replacements not an option if the OEM one is prone to failure? Or has the later model pumps been upgraded to resolve the issues?

Is the 2008 model a better buy than the 2007?
Do the same problems persist for the 4 door versions or is this strictly for the coupe?

sorry for all the questions guys.

1. Must have MP.
2. Must have auto (you will be tempted to tune this beast)
3. Recalls, what ever it is will be done/replaced even if car is out of MP.

There is no aftermarket replacement for the HPFP AFAIK, it is a 200bar pump, so I don't think walbro will have something that will work. I am not sure of cost, but you should be able to get it for around R3k, might have to import, though.

Thanks guys.

@ twinz, why do you say Auto if you want to tune the car?

Are there software upgrades available for these?

Is it out of motorplan because of the mileage?

Yes, one of the fanatics members had recalls done out of MP...HPFP, injectors and coils.

Get the VIN number and check it at a dealer, they should have on record to see whether or not the car went in for injectors to be checked and HPFP/software replacement (this is on coupe and sedan). Steptronic FTW and 335i is awesome car, with massive tuning potential. Any car can give you problems whether outside or inside motorplan, I won't say the 335i is a bigger risk.

Yeah it's "just" tipped over the 100k mark, hence the motorplan is void.

As far as recalls go, a recall means the manufacturer admits to something being wrong with the car from the factory. Whether in or out of motorplan should be irrelevant. At least this has been my experience with motorbikes to date. But thanks for the info guys. Will check it up with the dealer and ask about the recall.

Going to test drive the car later today. So just to be sure, you guys are saying there aren't any major concerns with the steptronic boxes? I know the audi's have some issues.

You will love the autobox on the 335. Dont compare the auto with autos on the older model beemers...this box rocks and i have not personally read of reported problems with the auto.

Box shouldn't be a concern. BMW will honor potential recalls that where not done during the Motorplan period.

Ok called the dealer.

Car has a comment. "Category Medium" for R78k. I'm guessing that's an accident?

There are will be other deals out there that offer the same if not more in terms of specs and give you better peace of mind. Keep looking would be my advice to you :)

yeah in addition to that incident, there was also something on the vanos replaced, turbo replaced and boost pressure regulator. Pity, cause this car is loaded will every thinkable extra.

But gonna give it a miss. Will look out for something else. Thanks guys.
