Hi guys

for a while ive been with dialdirect, insured a few older cars ive owned mostly 3rd party insurance. e.g my ex e32 730i v8 was around R85.00 a month as its book value was 23k or something. my ex e28 520i 1986 model 5'er was also thereabout, its book value was at i think R34000 or something according to them. now for the mind boggle, i sold the above cars. now i have a mint e28 528i 1985 model... same price roughly for 3rd party, but according to the its book is only R18.5k .

im baffled as to how a 1986 520i can have a book value almost double that of a 1985 528i according to mead and mcgrouther book.(as quoted by dialdirect agent)

next mindblow, i experience this with my previous e39 5 series aswell which was a 2001 525i in manual... they wanted clost to R1500 a month, 3rd party was like R142.00

my current e39, is a 530d also in manual, also a 2001 model. i got quoted today R1438.00 per month, and its book value is R83100. the book value sounds about right i guess...
3rd party is also just under R150.00 a month... i would have thought that fully comprehensive for a 13yr old car worth 83k according to the book could be had for under R500.00...

not sure what to do about my current e28 528i, in 1 yr she's 30yrs old..perhaps there is some sort of classic car insurance (dialdirect have no such thing)

id appreciate if there are folk here who can advise...

Contact PIB Insurance Group and speak to Morné. Mine is just under a grand as I'm still young.

Outsurance has essential cover for vehicles older that 5 years old, less than R50000.00 and not financed.

Thanks guys. I thought almost 1.5k was a bit exhorbitant. 950.00 pm considering the age of the car is still high but i suppose more decent. I would imagine a large factor with the e39 is lack of pir8 parts availability

Lack of OEM parts more like...

lack of oem parts? afaik most of the parts are still available ??

call me a conspiracy theorist, but i think the banks and insurance co's etc all start making things difficult the minute your "choice" of vehicle is less mainstream and when its not financed...

essentially the monetary system is designed NOT to favour those who are not utilising credit for something, often when it comes to financing or a loan you have to prove you dont need it in order to get it... lol mind boggles.

The dealers have never got stock of ANY parts I've ever requested for my car. They all need to be ordered from Germany at a wait of 2 weeks.

They don't even manufacture the removable mats for the E39 anymore. Ask Rob. He was told by a dealer to use E60 mats as it would work, and it doesn't.

south africa in the bigger scheme of things is a small country with a small market, our entire country is the size of texas.

our "specialised" market with anything "special" electronics, cars etc is actually so small.. percentage wise, it doesnt make business sense for them to stock items that dont sell well or often.

any good upholstery / trimmer can make up a pretty decent set of mats, i had some mats made for my e30 back in the day, way better than anything bmw made...for that car anyway.

parts that are popular, like cooling system stuff etc etc you will always find stock of and or at randburg warehouse.

anything that could be damaged in a accident can be ordered from bmw germany. sure you will be without a car for 3-6weeks atleast...

BMW didn't even have a coolant reservoir for me. Also had to order.

They don't have lights. They don't have screws or bolts (fairly important ones). They don't even have the most simple pieces of plastic when I need it...

Shoo that's a bit rough.

My '97 540 is insured for R68k fully comprehensive @ R262. (Must be said part of houshold)

But still a over a thousand differance?

Is it because I'm in the cape?

its mostly ex germany i know.

i had my e39 525i 2001 for 4.5yrs. my current e39 the 530d ive only recently started driving but have had it since may last year... all the m5 suspension parts i ordered were all ex germany..had to wait sometimes upto 4weeks....

coolant resevoir for m54 based petrol e39's they will probably have.. the 530d is generally a bit more hardy from a cooling point of view... cant say why but it would seem so.

its frustrating from a customer point of view, my point however is i dont give a rats ass if the parts have to come from timbuktoo... if im paying prime-o insurance rates and im in an accident i expect them to restore car to previous condition. they just lazy.. the extra admin etc etc involved because parts come from overseas etc..

to get a really good rate id have to be over 40 or over 50....
