Looks like a good buy, from the ad :inlove:
I thought so too. Any idea on trade and retail value?

That's about retail.
I also have one, with 93k km. awesome cars even though I also hate autos and diesel.
Biggest issues:
Transfer case servo motor,
CV Boots in the front,
Air suspension in the rear.

Nope. The site I used to use suddenly got password protected :fencelook:

You could go onto mytransunuion.co.za, sign up with your details and pay the 10 bucks for a more appropriate estimated value.

But that price is dead right fir the year, and the mileage is reasonably low.

So what I need to find then would be a white sportpack E53 facelift 3.0d with brand new tyres then...

:ty: and keep the info coming guys.

Lol at the diesel converts :fencelook: I had a 330i before buying my E53. I was hell bent on the 3.0 petrol motor as well, until I drove both cars back to back (3.0 petrol and 3.0 diesel). The rest, as they say, is history....3.0d any day! If you can afford the fuel bills, the 4.8is is epic and makes an amazing sound too :inlove:

Interesting thing on those tyres - the 19s are not badly priced relative to their size. You might want to check at Mintys or any other tyre place for prices. IIRC, paid around R2k for rear 19" tyres, but this was a few years ago. It is a surprising well priced "size" (unless you buy RFT's)

Also, when you check out cars, check the tyre wear on the insides of the rear. The E53 with the sports pack has crazy camber which wears out the inside of the tyre.

Check the panoramic roof as well, if you find a car with one. Make sure you open it all the way to the back. IIRC, it has 2 stage opening. First step, it opens like a normal roof, then 2nd step, it goes further back. Most fail from not being used enough.

Facelift E53 has rear air suspension as standard and 4.8is all round (I think). Probably the only "risk", but lots of DIYs on the net to identify and fix issues.

Suspension aside, most of the car is very similar to the E39.

Gizmo,

You cant really go wrong with the E53, its old school tech, and solid as hell.

Air suspension is a fsckup yea, so try and avoid something with that.

As for the fuel of satan, ost of the guys have said it already, and you know how I feel about the diesels.

Thing is, the 3.0 petrol or 3.0d is the smart move, you know the M54 backwards, the M57 seriously is a lot less complex then the M54, but the M62's parts are far more scarce, you are dealer dependent ect...

But fuel consumption/running costs, diesel, low down torque/gruntyness, diesel, and lets face it, you dont buy a X5 for top end, hands down diesel wins.

Yea there are more associated risks with big ticket items on the diesel such as injectors and diesel pumps and turbo's, so there is that, however if well maintained with regular service intervals, the diesels are good for well over 500k, with perhaps a turbo, have the injectors taken out and ultrasonically cleaned, stuff like that.

Other issue to keep in mind is the transfer cases, they go poof, thats how it is, 25k to recon.

Do however keep in mind that I have a very clean X3 3.0i right around the corner from you, with all maint done, new transfer case, and a new set of bridgestones, 05 E83 with 150 on the clock.

Great info guys. Thank you. Will consult with my dad and see if I can surprise my wife on her birthday coming up in October. Petrol off the list, 3.0d is what I'm now after.
X3 is the ugly stepchild and won't be considered at all. As far as dirt roads the x5 will seldom drive on them but it's a case of rather have it and not need it...

I feel the X3 is going to be too small as my touring was packed full for only 2 people on our recent holiday to mpumalanga, the X3 being no bigger than my touring won't work for us at a later stage when you need extra space for prams and baby bags...:fencelook:

The X5 is marginally larger than the X3 in terms of overall space.

In terms of road presence the X5 is the answer.

The 4.6iS we overhauled hauls like a steam train but is thirsty although it recently did a long trip and achieved some 10/100 consumption.
Around town is never runs below 15/100.

I think this is the first time I've seen Gizmo asking for advice :rollsmile:

My take : Go balls to the wall with the 4.8 or make the smarter diesel choice.

Just out of interest, my Kia Sorento also weighs in at 2tons and has a 205kw 3.5 v6 motor and hauls ass pretty good.

According to this : http://www.um.co.za/specifications/bmw_x5_3_0i_sport_steptronic_(2004).aspx the 3lt BMW x5 makes 170kw/300nm and the Kia 207kw/335nm so the 3lt petrol might be a bit sluggish.

Go for the diesel 150kw/480nm

Its a model/series I don't know so I need to do as much research before buying, but yeah im usually giving out the info, not receiving it...
It would also be beneficial to go diesel as I would learn the technology and in turn expand my business.
