Hey Gizmo,
So, I just bought a 2009 X5 xDrive 4.8i M-Sport a few months back. I always wanted the 4.8 petrol, loved the power and the sound of the V8... but in all honesty... I was foolish. I should have gone and test driven the diesel to at least compare. I had preconceived ideas about the diesel, so I never did. It was a big mistake. I absolutely love the X5, but the fuel consumption is just something crazy. I get about 350-400km out of a tank, @ R1200 a tank, thats a bit rough. The diesel would have been way better - I have guys at work that easily double and triple that mileage...
Other than that, I really can't complain. The X5 is an awesome machine, handles like a dream, has all the mod cons.
I bought out of motorplan, but have not had to maintain yet. It won't be the cheapest maintenance, but should not be too bad.
Tyres you can get excellent prices (about R8k for a set of 4) from places like MonteCarloMagsandTyres - the only place I get tyres now.
In my humble opinion, I really would suggest that you look at diesel... the 3.0d is probably your best bet.
Regards,
P
