Importing a UK car?

Been chatting to a friend of mine in the UK....
Has anybody imported a car from there?

Import duty? Transport cost?

Been looking on the UK Auto Trader, sit here and feel like crying.....will not put you through pictures...this should be enough....

I would rather get a late model e39 540i touring. Just a pity they have terrible weather there and the everything that is not painted is corroded terribly.

Plenty of those around as well....looked at the M5......and the tears started.....more then willing for that price to repair some rust....

Never done it, but the taxes would be heavy on this as the government will discourage this, or else the new car manufacturers, who pay millions in taxes will be up in arms

im very interested please tell us anything you find out... £2000 gets you quite a nice car there what can you get here for that? even if the import pushes it up to R50k it still works out cheaper

Yes the even after tax/duties might be cheaper but then shipping. I think shipping+duties/tax might not make it worth the risk. Buy a car you have not seen is person is always a big risk.

Hi guys, I own and import/export business DO NOT DO IT:nono: you can buy the car and get it here no problem, but you will NEVER ber able to register it here. According to customs this damages our economy, you can however import it if you lived overseas for more than six months. Take it from me guys I know people who did not listen and had the vehicle either shipped back at their expense or impounded:thumbsup:

So the guy who lives in the UK should import it, register it on his name, and then sell it to you. Problem solved.

My son is currently having his Golf 5 imported as he returned to SA after five years in the UK. He had the Golf for about 4 years as his daily driver and thought that it would be cheaper bringing it in than selling it (would probably get £4k for it in the UK if he was lucky).
Anyway, his container with the car in it and some furniture he is bringing back will probably be here by Monday week, and i for one is very anxious/nervous about taxes, etc., as the transport/container is already about £3,2k
The other thing is that he is not allowed to sell the car to anybody within 2 years after it is registered here.

It's greed as far as I am concerned! Can't see why locally made cars should be so inflated in price! In New Zealand you can buy ex-Japan cars which are all younger than 5 years old and relatively low mileage, Supras, Evos etc! And for very good prices apparently... :excited:

if you live in one of our neighboring country's you can get them too... they dirt cheap but you can reg then in SA the only way i found was to reg in in some place like Lesotho then bring it in to SA for a visit...

you have to keep it registered in that country for something like 5 years... then import it to SA and pay import dutys again... i really dont know how people get them reg here... maybe you have to know who you must pay :mmm:

Agreed, like I posted earlier.

Its not good for the economy. This is the same reason a South African cannot purchase a car by these guys importing them into Swaziland

My car is a 1993 and I defy you to find a trace of rust on it.....A car in Durban is a rust bucket in a blink of an eye....You can find plenty of nice well cared for rust free cars here but you do have to look for them....

An E36 M3 goes here for between 3000-6000quid.....3000quid ones have usually been ragged though.Hundreds of 5 series...Check out pistonheads classifieds

As said you can import them to SA but you need to have owned them for at least 6months......

Import duty makes it unworthwhile though and shipping etc..etc...You'll end up paying as much out there as importing one and vice versa too...I thought of importing a E30 333 from there but import duty etc...etc.. akes it unworthwhile and the cost of buying a car out there in the first place.....

You can pick up some E36's for as cheap as 250quid out here..Most of them are MOT failures but the owner can't afford to fix them or has the space to break them....Most are easy fixes too

Thats way to cheap for a car of that mileage and age.....possible scam...we get them here too you know like those ones you see on gumtree

6000quid = about R78 000

the e36 M3 on auto trader now are R75 000 - R135 000 we pay about the same or sometimes less for our high end cars here in SA... where we stand to gain alot from importing is the middle to lower range cars ive seen alot of e46 330i going for about £2000 (R26 000) im not sure if this is the normal price but we pay about R130 000 for a good one here... so i could save alot by importing one if i could do it
