I resprayed my boot lid...

This is actually the second time I resprayed the boot lid, it had two dings in it from when the previous owner tried to close the lid on something that was too big to fit inside and it made dents from the inside.

I knocked them back down and resprayed. But then I found some other imperfections so I had to restart the whole process. But here are the images.

The polishes I used.

Thanks guys!

I colour sanded it, and then polished my ass off, but its not perfect yet. Some spots here and there still need more polish, but I can read a newspaper in the reflection easily so I am happy.

But now the rest of my car has orange peel, although better than modern BMW's but not up to my standards, so I guess the whole car is getting a colour sanding soon, but the hours involved is quite scary, but fun.:flyfun:

Thanks, a complement from you is a complement indeed.

First I sanded the paint with 600 grit till smooth, then painted with a build primer( for those that don't know, its a thick primer used to fill imperfections) and sanded it back down to the paint with 600 grit.

Then I painted the car with 6 layers of paint and let it dry for a day. It had some light orange peel, so I wet sanded it with 2000 grit till flat(took me a whole day) and then went over it again with 2500, I wanted 3000 grit but could not get in time.

Then for the polish... I have AUTO GLYM bodyshop polishes, but I wanted to use off the shelf products just for a DIY perspective. I used Meguiar's Ultimate Compound with a pneumatic dual action polisher( with a cutting pad) to remove the sand marks, a circular polisher would have been faster but the DA did the job. Then I used Meg's Swirl X with a finishing pad on the DA to remove the swirl marks and give a bit more depth.

It worked well and is better looking than any paint job I have seen in a while.

Jacques

ps. If you are contemplating colour sanding(removing orange peel), use >2000 grit, it takes a while, but it is much more safe than coarser grits and less likely to cut further than needed. Also the sand marks are quite easy to remove, but I would recommend a coarser polish than Ultimate compound, something like Autoglym 03B, its much quicker.

The finish looks like a bucket of wet paint and makes me want to dip my finger into it.
