test drive with the current owner in the passenger seat

take the car away on your own...in the current RSA crime/corruption situation....mmmm :nonono:

maybe leave a garauntee behind whilst you go on a "solo" test drive...not your wife...that could be reason enough to never come back

I sit on the fence with this one.

When I had my E39 540 up for sale and I let people test drive it with me in the passenger seat I was constantly telling them to just slow the F(&^ down, "it's not your car yet"

It was very very very scary for me and I withdrew the car from sale because of it. With this sale, you dont know who was there before you or how they behaved.

I have tossed the keys of the M5 to one or two respected friends and they always treated the car carefully and are very aware they do not want to break it, so you can never tell. I have bought several cars without a test drive, I shouldnt have, but I did.

With me being the pedantic a-hole I am, I HATE other people driving my car. Especially workshop people, they are the worst, flooring it around the corner, while I stand and cringe in a cloud of smoke. But in this case he is wrong.

The only cars I did not test drive were the ones I bought new.

Any used car should be test driven. That is not negotiable. When I bought the Z3, I took ///Shaun with me and had him test drive it and give me his opinion. I did not drive it until I paid and took ownership. Reason was he owned a S50B32 before and knew what to look for. No test drive = dont buy.

The purpose of a test drive to to get a general feel of the car. There is no reason to abuse it on a test drive.

If I am selling a car, I would allow a test drive but will go with. Should the "buyer" abuse the car in any way, i would ask them to stop the car, gen into my drivers seat and leave them in the side if the road.

Ask one forum member who took his car for work to be done at a fellow forum member .....standing waiting he heard a car coming at .....well a good speed .... a rather sheepish look and ...took it for a test drive :roflol::roflol:
the e54 540i auto can take it .......

When I bought my car from freerider I was surprised he let me test drive it considering I just registered on the forum and he didn't know me from a bar of soap, he didn't even come along for the drive, if the guy won't let you test drive then walk away. Spend your hard earned wak elsewhere.

I would also walk away. I want to drive a car myself so that I can feel what the steering is like, do the brakes pull, is the pedal soft, etc, etc.

So, no test, no buy.

I agree man.
No test drive no deal.

Just send him to hell and buy the other one. Bet you even though its stock and a year older you will probably save some cash and do the upgrade the way you want them

Not cool.

Tell him to do the following, tell them that you would like the car inspected properly, in his presence, where teh vehicle will be driven.

Take it to somebody like Gizmo to evaluate the vehicle.

If he says no, tell him no. You do not buy a car that you have not test driven.

It is a difficult situation i agree that you do NEED to test drive but i also know of quite a few guys that have had their BMW written off by a perspective buyer...

most beemers are quite quick compared to most cars and alot of people just dont know how to drive...

even if the car got written off chances are the guys got more out insurance than they would have sold the car for anyway no? :fencelook:

lol not that it is cool at all to have that happen, but everything in moderation, if the guy is genuinly interested and not just trying to joy ride then there is no reason to say no to a test drive, walk away if thats the case.

Tell him to call hiz insurance house and add you as a driver of the car... if he doesnt want to, tell him to stick the car.

I wouldn't buy either.

I went to a private car dealership one day and asked to test drive a 320d E90. The salesman told me they don't do test drives unless an offer to purchase has been signed and the necessary paperwork is in place. To me that's me buying without test driving. He wouldn't even budge when I suggested he drives the car.

Needless to say I walked away from the dealership.
