I like a Porsche in wild colours (purples, golds, bright green) or in more staid colours (blues, deep green). Also depends on the Porsche itself, feel like a GT3RS in a stupid lurid orange makes perfect sense. A 911S in a lurid green would look ridiculous!
For lambos/ferrari I almost exclusively like plain colours, silver, white, dark blues etc. It's an insane car that will draw attention even if you painted it in vantablack, so having it "stealth" just looks classier.
I'd agree, if the price delta between 4.0GTS and GT4 was bigger I'd have gotten a 4.0GTS manual gladly. At the time I ordered the delta was like R200k. Given the rarity and the (IMHO) cooler looks of the GT4 it made sense to me.
I even considered a spyder very seriously but the silliness of the roof turned me off.
But yeah, I'd imagine a GTS is 95% of the thrills and substantially more practical (extra 20mm ride height, front PDC, softer suspension). Might be a bargain in a few years if they depreciate nicely!
Overall though no complaints, I was on a run with a GT4RS and can confirm it's bonkers fast in well equipped hands. I don't love the look and the price is utterly absurd (it's basically $-$ for a 992GT3!). I actually think (the lovely air intake aside) that the GT4 looks cooler, that swan neck spoiler does nothing for me.
In terms of value for money at the stupidity end of the car spectrum the best is probably a 991.1GT3RS, you can likely get one for R3m flat, maybe a high miler for R2.7ish levels?
