Hi
My Z4M is still under motorplan
However it spends most of its days in the garage and only gets driven on weekends

My question is, how often should i change my oil?
Also does the Service indicator only count down mileage or does it also count down time

Hi

If I am not mistaken, it should be at least every two years otherwise BMW will cancel the plan on the car.....

Cheers

Does anyone ever 'top up' oil for a M3 or Z4M? Say you pull into a garage and the oil level is low. What then? I doubt garages would stock recommended oil.

You should keep a bottle or two with you. They come in 1L derivatives.

Service indicator does time or mileage... But if you fear it's taking too long, most say at least once a year.

I have a pedantic mate with his M... Does oil every 5000km.

i woulnd not bother as there are supposed to be sensors that will pick up if the oil is getting dirty supposedly...let the system tell you when to relube.

Our E46 M3 has done almost 9000 km's since the last oil change and the oil is still on the full mark so not a drop has been used. It will have its oil changed in the next month or two.

I would suggest changing the oil once a year or 10000 km's.

10000-12000km is a good interval, 25k too long IMO.

mine has never used a drop of oil

yep as the others have said, half way between indicated services is a good time to replace oil and filters. If your using oil between those changes, something is not as it should be.

Driving short distances promotes acid and moisture buildup in the oil, and this acidity causes seals to perish quicker and sludge buildup. Drive about 60km with oil up to temp to remove moisture. Also, an engine that doesn't run much can also dry seals out causing many leaks, so I would want my oil to be in almost perfect condition for an engine that is not used much.

That is why I would say 5000km or 6 month intervals for oil changes. It might cost more but then you know you always have good lubrication, and little sludge. Also remember that oil cools your engine, so keep your oil fresh. This is the one place you can not afford to skimp.

You do know that the S54 uses Castrol TWS and costs around R1000 to replace?
It has also been designed to be changed at 25000km intervals (which I think is ridiculously far apart) so a halfway 12000km interval is more than adequate.
5000km/6month is crazy

Crazy, now that is an aspect I did not consider.

I listed my concerns, but if its your engine you can use coke instead of oil for all I care.

Wow. I never knew Coke = Castrol TWS...
And here I am being stupid by spending 10^2 times more on Castrol instead of the alternative cheap substitute coke :thumbdo:
