Well, if its worth anything, my brother owned an m6 as a daily for 4 years and 80 000km. No serious mechanical jobs ever done, just normal servicing.

The M6 is far more reliable. Not sure why though as its the same drivetrain

Yea we came to that conclusion as well. It's weird.

It would be interesting to compare sales figures. M6 vs M5

I suspect these issues are most often related to how the cars are driven and a general weakness in design versus performance. Maybe for normal sane daily driving they are far less affected by these issues. A friend of mine went for a spin with a friend of his in his relatively new (at the time) E60 M5 and they had belted it for a short distance over the bridge going past the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town, on the other side there apparently was a diff overheated warning! We talking maybe a kilometre or so in terms of distance travelled!!

Could be worse, the clutch of a Ferrari Enzo is only good for literally THREE (yes, THREE) proper launches, then needs to be replaced! At least that's what I remember reading and was even mentioned on 5'th Gear all those years ago... :nonono:

+1

I have to add I've done quite a few launches with no ill effects, even after the mods, which adds quite a few kw's to the equation. I always say, drive a M5 to break it and you will.
Mostly I get frustrated with blocked injectors due to NF OB and the lack of stock of injector cleaner. Not sure if the higher capacity injector are the problem, never had it on the OEM injectors.

Don't know guys maybe I am just lucky but I drive this car like a crazy man at least twice a week and nary a stumble . She runs and runs . I think that if we were a fly on the wall to all these M5 that just break we would see a lot of abuse . I do remember on the Top Gear run around the track the diff of the test car gave up the ghost and Clarkson called the best car in the world but temperamental . Still the most fun to be had outside prison

I m aware of one in the eastern cape that ran bearings out of motor plan - BMW quoted R412,000 for a replacement motor. A second hand one was acquired and this lasted for two months before expiring. An Internet search has revealed weak sub-assemblys and unreliable transmissions. Seems they are soft.....pity cause they are fun to drive

BS on the abuse part man. Its an ///M car, if you wanted a car to treat with gloves then get a 320i etc. An ///M car is supposed to be thrashed, I have now owned four ///M car's and not one of them bar the M5 has ever given me shit.

My E46 M3 I bought with 20 000 on the clock, thrashed it daily, lots of mods, track days, and sold it with 215 000 on the clock with not one days crap.

Same goes for my E90 M3 and now E92 M3, they all see/saw redline a few times a day.

The E60 M5 is fragile, nothing more to it.
