High Mileage Ms

I have been thinking how the larger M engines age[/align].

Lets say an E39 M5, with 200000km on the clock. What are the chances that it has been rooted? They are performance engines, so high reving is in thier genes. But were they built for longevity?

Not sure about the E39, but I've read on the US forums of various E46 M's reaching 200K miles (about 320K KMs) without any major issues.

I'd be curious to know about high mileage E39 M's though :dunno:

I have seen a e39 M5 with 270k on the clock, engine was still going strong, suspension was shot..
If it is highway miles engine should still be fine.

I guess it boils down to how much of TLC the baby has been given

Most ///M drivers, drive their cars like they stole it. ///M's are designed to be driven hard & provided u maintain 'em, regular services, good oil(s), BMW parts etc. they will reward your TLC with many happy, unforgettable KM's

If the previous owners drove the car hard from cold-start, then they require a p-klap as most of the damage occurs then :hammerhead::censored:

I have had an e36 M3 (3.0l) with 295000km on it, with not a single issue, and the motor has never been opened. Not even a headgasket. The hooligan that got it now still havnt been able to break anything, and it is now well in excess of 300k. i Traded the M3 in on an e39 M5 with 211000km and although it ran very strong compared to others i have driven, I feared the worst to happen everytime i turned the key. The vanos was definitely on its way out on both cylinder banks. According to the history, nothing ever broke on the S62 up to then. I never had any fear of something breaking in the M3 however.
