Hi All

i have a budget of about 65k and i'm looking at getting an e46 individual m sport , i found some 320d, 318i, 320i, 325i and a few 330d. i just always liked the look fo the msport e46's and the individual wheels

I need some advice, is it worth it to buy te 320d or 330d with about 200 000 on the clock or would it be better to stick to petrol.

i know diesels are not great at high mileage but overseas forums are pretty confident about high km bms ?

let me know your thoughts, will i be buying a time bomb?

cheers!

Diesels not great at high mileage..? We have 530d's here that are waaaay over 200 000km... One over 300 000km and one thats over 400 000km... They're built to last... PROVIDED they have been well maintained...

E46 330d autoboxes are hit and miss and can fail... So try and look for a manual...

320d's are known to have turbo issues so personally I would stay away.

Not so clued up when it comes to the petrol engines... But I know the M54's are fairly bullet proof too

If you do not know the car at 200Ks you are playing Russian roulette.

High mileage is one thing however high mileage and lack of maintenance will lead to you paying and paying with no reprieve.

If you can fix it yourself may be worth looking at if not and you are dependent on garages I would stay away from it.

GLW your search

My e46 330d 6 speed man is at 260k km's and still pulling like a steam train.

Had an E39 530d before that with 160k km's and it was a WRECK!! Rather judge the individual car than the model as a whole!

Golden advice  Buy something where you have a clear view of the history.

Both petrol and diesel will give you issues if not maintained properly.

I've heard people say that diesels are more problematic than petrols but thats a very broad (and possibly unfair) generalisation.

So as all of the above have said, a known history is vital but even then theres still no guarantees.

Thats the nature of the 2nd hand beast.

Besides all the maintenance etc, remember in Europe they have much cleaner diesel, only recently did we get 10ppm from Sasol, I'm sure the other companies will follow soon.

My 1 Hilux I had I only used 50ppm diesel, it ran smooth and didn't even smoke, it was stolen and recovered 8 months later, a week after I bought the facelift Hilux, so I bought it back and sold it to my FatherInLaw, who uses farm diesel, 500ppm, it smokes a little now and not as quiet anymore.

Just a thought
