As far as I've heard/read on here, they're pretty faultless

I owned a 2005 320d At MSport, was bought on 105 000km, traded in on 135 000kms, during the time I had it, we only did servicing and brakes, normal stuff. I was surprised at the reliability and the performance was great.

LOL, yep tyres aren't going to last, torque is torque...........

model: 2002 E46 320d
kilos: 352500km
only major breakdowns: oil heat exchanger that is currently being replaced( oil got into cooling system), EGR replaced when it burnt through, diesel return line leaking, turbo replacement at 60k( BMW recall)
vehicle get serviced with BMW parts and full synthetic oil.
Bought the vehicle as second owner from colleague on 180000km. use it daily and put on about 1000km/week.
Even though my car is at the mechie as I write this, still my most reliable car ever.

remember that the pre facelift e46 320d's were not common rail injection.. they use a vp44 injection distributer pump, which is around 15k to REPAIR , not even replace, last time i asked.. usually the lift pump in the tank fails, and vp44 seizes..

making them in my opinion more risky maintenance wise than the newer commonrail e46 320d's..

funny enough, i have not personally heard of a single high pressure pump (not vp44, the common rail pump) failure on a common rail bmw diesel.. (but thats just me)

Don't see many if any of the N47 2.0L diesel engines featuring here, all seem to be M47 or older.

I have an Oct 2007 E90 320d Auto (with the much dreaded N47 engine - some say a ticking time bomb). I have 145000kms on the clock. No engine issues to date.

i prefer the auto boxes on the 320d as the manual always seems to be outa boost when you go over a speed hump in 2nd... you gotta wait for around 1800rpm before they respond...

the auto doesnt have this problem

Hi
Got a 2002 E46 320d. Got the car for a year now, did the clutch and flywheel 184000km cost R10k after getting parts at Goldwagen, turbo packed up at 200500km , just 1000km after service, cost me R10k and car is still with the mech as it is giving boost issues after new turbo was fitted, only boosting in fourth and fifth gears only. The car is now breaking my heart, am starting to miss my old petrol straight six, only gave me one problem which was a water pump inherited from previous owner.

2006 320d 108000km.No issues with car even when it was in motorplan.Only thing i can suggest is do swirl flap removal with pre lci models as they use the infamous M47 engine as was used in the E46,just a precaution.Other than that solid car, very happy with mine.

5 sets of tyres is crazy for only 100 000kms. 5 sets of rears is understandable. But i dont see how you can go through front tyres so fast.

That's hectic! My dad used to get 60000km out of a set of tires on his 540 :fencelook:
