High fuel consumption

Hi Guys,

The last couple of weeks I noticed that my fuel consumption has increased alot. I normally average 9.8l/100km and now my average is 11.8lts/100

I leave for the northern cape tomorrow and don't have the luxury of a BMW garage there.

Is there anything I can check that could be causing the high consumption?

Someone recommended I should take out the air filter and blow it out with a compressor until I can get it replaced....good idea?

Sorry my car is an F30 328

Hi,

How long have you owned the car for (how many kms have you driven it?).

I would suspect that the recent heatwave in the country may be to blame for everyone's increased fuel consumption. My Mazda CX5 went up 2 litres per 100km recently as well.

If you drive with the aircon off on the highway, do you see an improvement?

Hi there, I was thinking the same thing, it's been terribly hot here in the North west.

I have owned the car for 4yrs and it have 85k on the Odo.

Im scared to drive without the AC on...my wife will kill me.

Do not clean the air filter with a compressor as you will end up tearing the fibres inside the filter.

I’m sure the heatwave will have something to do with the rise in consumption. Maybe check tyre pressure etc. as well.

Heatsoak on the F30 is terrible due to the tiny stock intercooler.. Go drive the car from cold at night for a while and check the consumption!

You can't drive in this heat without climate control on max!:=):

Excelent advice here, the filter won't survive..

Hi Guys,
A quick update.

I have been driving since this morning and have done just over 750km. I put a bottle of liqui moly injector cleaner before I left. So far so good.

My average is 7.2l/100. I have never got below 9.6in the past so I'm not complaining. I'm wondering if the injector cleaner has something to do with it.

Another 500km to go and IL post my final average

That’s something I should actually start monitoring, but last time my highway driving sat at 7.6l/100km. But seeing that I will be making a trip to MP I will pay more attention.

blowing the filter out is a big no no .

correct tyre pressures is a yes . other then that you cant do much about the heat

:withStu: , while you at it, have your right foot checked out as well.

Hi guys

Final average after 1250km was 7.6. it's the best I have got with my car.

Nothing to worry about then, so that’s great news

Those cars are quite frugal on the open road if you keep your right foot in check.

Yes I can vouch for that. after fitting a 330d intercooler no more heatsoak and it pulled much much better and constant no matter what the outside temp. Still wanna fit a performance intercooler on my 330d that I have now. I removed the 330d intercooler from my 320d when I traded it in. Also note that the Facelift 320d already have the 330d intercooler.(facelift 320d and 330d now have the same intercooler)
