Hey guys my e28 525e consumes too much petrol ever since it stood for quite some time since I was in Cape town. It just "drains" very quickly and also black smoke comes out the exhaust when I rev it up past 4000rpm. Also today I was changing the spark plugs and found them covered in engine oil. What causes this? How can I fix them and cost maybe?

Hey there Clyde20

Re the oil, just change the rubber valve gasket, it comes with 6 seals for the sparkplugs tubes, and that's what's screwed on your car. They get hard with age / mileage and then allow oil to leak into the tubes. Do this asap otherwise your coils will end up getting stuffed too.

Do a full service first, all filters etc and see if there is any improvement ? Black smoke is better than blue smoke - air / fuel mixture perhaps ?

Valve cover gasket - about R400 from agents - DIY it, plenty on vids on you tube etc. Not hard just time consuming.

PS - mileage ?

Mileage is just over 270k. Im thinkin of an engine swap later on in the year. Would an e36 328i (m52b28) engine run with the stock gearbox I have?

Does the 525e have a M20 motor ?
The M20 series motors have the spark plugs on the right hand side of the motor above the exhaust manifold . The only oil that may get in there is from the tappet gasket leaking above the manifold . They also have a distributor and single coil .

The M50 motors have the spark plugs between the camshafts with two rubber gaskets each sealing off three spark plug holes .These do get brittle with age and allow oil into the spark plug recess which will run down the spark plug when it is removed , you then think the plug is oiled , but it is not happening when the motor is running . Here you have an individual coil pack for each plug .

Your black smoke is an over rich mixture , overfueling is occurring at these revs . Have your cars exhaust gas analyzed and the mixture can then be set , normally at 0.8 to 1.2 , ideally 1.0 .

Good luck .

Another reason that the car will smoke may well be if it has old petrol in it as the volatiles evaporate over time and what stays behind is oil.
A full tank of new fuel and maybe an octane booster should sort out your smoking.
