Help with Change of Ownership/registration

I recently purchased a E36 328i. The car has been sitting for at least two years and has also not had its licence renewed for about the same period maybe even longer. It will be only used as a track car.

I bought it from a trustworthy person who never did change of ownership for various reasons. I have all the registration docs.

I went to the licencing department and they say I need the previous owners ID and signature. I cant get hold of the previous owner.

What should I do?

The car will not be used on the road but I would like it transferred into my name and if possible licensed (but not serious if not licensed for the road).

Sounds similar to my step-grandfather's problem. He ended up paying a hefty fee to try get his Lotus licensed and into his name after about 3 years of it standing. You might have a problem if you can't get hold of the previous owner. Don't you have a contract/agreement from when you took the car over, saying that the car is sold as is and that he is not responsible for it after it leaves his property or something?

You have to have the Original paperwork and seller ID to do a Transfer. The will not do it otherwise.

I didn't have to sign original documents when I sold the Jetta, and the car is off my name and registered to the new owner...

Did you fill in a yellow form (Notification of Change of Ownership) and give the new owner a copy of your ID?

He has a copy of my ID but I didn't fill in the change of ownership form because they accepted the agreement we had drawn up

Mine will be a bit more complicated I think, as I have the agreement with the new owner who did not change ownership when he purchased it.

If a car is scraped how do you prove ownership?

Brucet, i used these guys to register my bmw and bike. http://www.weq4u.net/services.html . Didnt have any issues. There prices are reasonable as well. Beats spending the whole day at the DMV. Im sure they have a few contacts at the DMv that can sort it out for u. My stuff usually took 2 days.

I have never had any problems registering a car on my name even though the license has expired. I have also never had to hand in ANY details of the previous owner of the car. This includes registering a car from another province on my name as well. All I needed was the blue form, roadworthy, copy of my ID and proof of address. If you are in PTA I suggest you go to the Menlyn roadworthy center in Garsfontein road, that is where I always go.
