Help needed in the East Rand

Hi Family/Fanatics

Firstly, may 2015 be a great year to you all

I need some help

I did a service on my car last weekend, all went smooth until I had to change the oil filter. the tool my brother lent me looks similar to a 3 jaw gear puller and doesn't seem to work.

Is there anyone who has the correct tool to change the oil filter?

I would be more than happy to reward someone with a six pack of cold ones if they can lend me their oil filter tool for a few minutes

Oh, and its a e46 318i M43 motor

Hi Tris, i take it your oil filter housing is the metal part with the plastic section that when removed houses the filter. Also, the three legged "puller" i assume is the filter removal tool that has a 19mm bolt head that you use to remove the filter housing. If that is so, try to wrap an old tyre tube around the filter housing to give it a bit more body and then try and remove it with your brothers filter removal tool. I had a similar problem on a M44 motor recently but the owner of the car helped me by holding the tool onto the filter housing to prevent it from slipping. We got it off that way. I also fitted the "legs" of the tool with pieces of rubber tubing to give them some body and prevent the grips from damaging the filter housing (only two rubbers showing). That also helped!

On my e46 it has a nut type of thing on the oil filter housing. 32 socket works perfect. However on the merc its a funny cap. I used that 3 prong tool with some cloth to prevent damage and it worked. The rubber on the legs is a good idea.
