Help Needed - E90 320i

I'm getting my car back today - Yippee

Good news and bad news

Good news is that I drove my car home last night. Oh what a relieve after driving a corolla for about 2 weeks. The soft clutch, the roadholding, the smell of leather etc etc etc

Bad news, got home, picked up children from mom-in-law, got back into car and started up. To my dismay, on comes the amber management light, but only now it's like 'coloured in' halfway.

I give a slight rev and the car is pinging heavy.

Check the manual - all it says is, the engine power is being reduced, have the engine checked out immediately, and can continue journey but reduce speed.

Called the machy immediately and car will be back with him this morning again. :dunno:

I just hope it's only cam timing that maybe wasn't set properly which is causing the pinging and that whatever it is, be resolved today to have me driving my car this evening already.

Valvetronic controller packed up according to machy.

I'm ordering the part now as well as the crank case breather.

I would be so upset if he were to tell me his gonna charge me labour again.

Just a note:

SMG Cape Town (based in Century City) gave me the best prices on the parts.

Valvetronic controller - R2433.17 incl VAT
Crank Case Breather - R462.70 incl VAT

Update:

Machy installed the new valvetronic controller and crank case breather yesterday. When I got to the car they were busy replacing the covers in the engine compartment and after a few minutes plugged in the diagnostic machine.

No errors

Took the car for a drive, came back and switched off and let the car stand for about 10 minutes. Then went back, plugged in diagnostic again:

No errors :excited:

Drove off from machy (Athlone) through to Milnerton and back home. Up until now, no errors

Now my only concern is: even with a new crank case breather, the car is still smoking. White smoke. I am hoping it's just rings that need to re-seat as I might have had sludge build up.

I have also noticed, since a full oil reading on the OBC yesterday, is that the oil level is just above 3/4 today. Seems like the car is burning oil. Looked at the engine and when standing facing the engine, there seems to be 2 "breather" protrusions from the cylinder head with like a drip tray below it. The one closest to me is clean but the one furthest away is very oily and so is the drip tray just below it. Not sure if this is related in anyway.

One more thing: the car feels way, way more responsive. Low down torque is back. The car feels like it's fresh and just wants to go. I'm loving it.

Only the smoking :bawling:

Sell it, it's too new to be having all sorts of trouble.... Never have without plan, unless it's over 7yrs old.... Quit sinking money into it...

Good luck

TBH - the car is back to normal and drives better than before. I am thinking of selling, but won't be now. I have decided to hold on for a few more months, maybe even a year.

Final update on this from my side:

It's been a week and gradually the smoking subsided over the past few days.

The car is now back to it's normal old self, no smoking, better consumption than what I had before, much more quiet than what it was and the little low down torque is back.

Sheer Driving Pleasure has returned

glad to hear your car is back to it's usual self... Enjoy man... !!!!

Thanx Guys

Just to elaborate on how I feel/felt:

Before the car had to go in for repairs, there was nothing more I wanted but to sell the car and replace her with a Golf 5 GTI. I was looking for anyway to get rid of the car. The drive wasn't the same like it used to be, car felt really lazy etc. In fact I reached a stage where I only drove the car if I really had to. Basically I was seriously lacking in the TLC department.

Now that she's back and running beautifully I want to at least hold onto her for the next year. I just love the way she is driving.

Hi BMW Fanatic

I seem to be having a similar problem. When I was parking my car I noticed a smoke from the exhaust on my rear view mirror. Then apon checking , when reving a white blue smoke comes out with a strong smell. I drive a 320i E90 2007, 109 000 km, I just had a valvetronic motor replaces in February 2013 at 105 000km which costed R 8000. I also noticed high oil consumption a 1 liter two months. Do you think its my timing chain tensioner ? 28/04/2013

@ Funkytoyz, glad the car is back to normal, and without TOO much cost. I would still start saving for a decat, they are prone to clogging over 150k km, and are a blight on performance and fuel economy at any time. LOSE THE THING, there are no mice in your exhaust, why keep a cat? @vrsiswana, it could well be, but there are also other possibilities. Get your codes read, consult a knowledgable mechanic and keep your fingers crossed.

@Pfw28 , there is no warning engine light coming up and power is normal. The strange thing this morning when I start my car there is no smoke even if I rev, nothing coming out. Two things I noticed thou is the oil level, yesterday when I checked level it was sitting at half when the exhaust was smoking and this morning the oil level is three quarter full. I also noticed that the inside of the exhaust was sweaty but today it's dry when I checked after my trip to work and no smoke.

Is this normal?

Wow guys, revival of the old:=):

This car is since sold - I now drive a VW GTI :fencelook:

Vrsiswana - burning oil and/or smoking is valve stem seals buddy. I eventually had to replace mine as the smoking mentioned in this thread eventually just got worst and oil consumption increased. I had the valve stem seals done in Dec 2011 and when I traded the car in 2 weeks ago, she was due her oil service. She never used a bit of oil since and no smoking at all.

If you in CPT I can recommend a mach to assist you with the seals

Need help
Hi, I'm driving a 2011 320i e90 and its a second hand car which i bought in february ths year. Th car was driving fine for the 1st month with no problems whatsoever. Late in march i started noticing that the car is using a lot of oil and it started smoking on pull away and it also didn't have power like when i got it.
I really need to fix this car because im using it to travel to work and dont know what could be the problem before it could cause more damage to the engine. The engine oil that im using is castrol gtx and every month it requires the oil.

Please help me because i love this car. Im in rustenburg

Yours truly
Keotshepile
