Getting nowhere with the BMW mechanic. Is there anyone I can take it to in JHB to look at and maybe replace? I can get a new fan at CR Auto in Pta for R2280. But they don't fit it

If you have the fan and have not managed to get it changed by Saturday you can come to my house and I will help, should not take longer than two hours.

to change the fan in literally a 5 min job... 2 screws on top and unclip the electric connectors and slide the fan out... oh you have to take the airbox snorkel off with is anther few seconds...

the only problem is the screws are torx so you need the right bits...

Thanx for this, I had to strip more than this bits on the E66 to get it changed .. :)

Hi guys. Thanks for all the offers. I am still in Jhb with the silver E90. I am going to get my car this weekend. So I will probably buy the fan next week :ty:

But just for peace of mind, I want someone here to check it out for me

Okay. Spoke to the guy at Park Motors myself. It is a resistor in the motor that has malfunctioned or something. He says that the WHOLE unit has to be replaced, the resistor can't be replaced seperately. Can anyone confirm this for me? (I have no idea how these things work)

He also told me that the fan does come on, but only at the first speed, and as soon as the car heats up, the fan doesn't speed up to cool the engine down, and that will cause S H 1 T when driving in the city. Now as I said earlier, I have found an electric fan (which it is) in PTA West for R 2280. The guy I spoke to said it's a new fan

The dude in Welkom is looking at a second hand fan

Will talk to my dad to see wat gan vir wat

IF I buy the fan in PTA west. Is there anyone close I can go to to fit it? Maybe a fellow fanatic or fanatic's friend that won't charge me an arm and a leg? I don't expect it to be done for free

I think I might have same problem. Last night had the car idling while fiddling with the diagnostic software and it started to overheat - water temp went to 120 deg c according to the diagnostic software. Oil temp was around 90 deg c. The fan only switched to the first speed though. Checked it again this morning. Water in radiator felt luke warm, but according to diag software was almost 110 deg c in only a couple minutes, so I'm leaning towards a thermostat that's faulty and not the fan. I replaced the thermostat about 40 000 km's ago. The old one was still ok and luckily I kept it. Will refit the old one to check.

If you can only get one in PTA then you can come by my place and I can help you with it.

Have you tried goldwagen? I know CR auto to be really expensive.

To fit the fan is literally 5 minutes work. Side cutter to lift the expanding rivets and a torx bit to remove one screw (I slotted mine with a hack saw so a normal flat screw drive works just fine - had no Torx available when it broke down once).

Here are the items to remove to loosen the fan and remove it:

@ Moranor - I did not bother to look around for alternateves at the time of replacing mine.
