320d. With all due respect, not even a comparison
Just do oil changes every 10k and hopefully no turbo issues as well

Thank you.... but is the turbo much of a problem?

I've only had mine for about 30 000km now and total mileage around 142 000km, but so far so good. Hopefully it stays this way
Others here are much more experienced and can offer more valuable input
Before I bought I did a lot of research and the E90's don't seem to be a problem
What I don't get is BMW's service interval's whilst under MP - how do they change every 20 000km or whatever ?
Not good for motor or turbo ?
Since I've owned mine, already did 3 oil changes and another one coming up in 4000km
The Indy I use is a BMW "specialist" as has many E90 320D's as clients, all on a 10 000km oil change schedule - he says never had any issue
But whenever I do go there for service, there are always broken 320i's ! Go figure
And besides, way more power, much better economy - kind of a no brainer in MY opinion

I had 320i and for the past 4 years the 320d. Both manual cars.

The 320i is not quite as bad as it sounds on here though. It was more refined than the diesel (quieter and less vibration) and if you use the revs it moved along nicely - although if course not at the performance level of the diesel. If you travel alone most of the time, 320i performs adequately, but if you have passengers it becomes slow.

Diesel performs very well especially at higher altitudes where the i loses out more. The clutch on diesel (DMF) however is heavy and gets replaced frequently - auto probably better for diesel. Services on MP works out around 12000km's and dealers use very good Shell synthetic oil. Hopefully the turbo will last. There is a definate problem with some timing chains on some of the cars - google 'N47 timing chain noise' - you'll find a few youtube videos where you can hear it clearly. Very expensive to fix since timing chain at back of engine if you're unlucky to have this problem.

Overall the 320d is the more desirable car.

E90 320i = no go
The 320d wins hands down :coolShake:

GL with your search!

Can the same be said for the E46 320d?

I suppose if the E46 320d in question is in tip top shape and properly maintained, the necessary steps taken to prevent any problems, then yes. But, the E46 320i with the M54B22 is in a different league compared to the 4 pot in the E90 320i.
