Hi Everyone, So after test driving many bakkies, i decided to drive a X5. I am really glad i did as i knew it was the car for me in the 1st 100 metres :inlove:

2005 X5
3.0 Diesel
145 000KM
R159 000.
New tyres
Panoramic Sunroof

i think it is the sport as it has the sport seats/steering wheel and sport wheels. It also has a full size spare and non run-flats which i am super happy about after reading this forum about the price of run flats.

Anyway, i would appreciate any input you can give on the deal. I will be adding a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty just incase.

Thanks Guys and i hope to be offically joining the forum by the end of the week:rollsmile:

Sounds like a good deal, what engine is it? Just make sure you do a thorough check through.

Thanks, edited post. It is the 3.0 diesel. Took it for a 100km test drive today and couldn't pick any issues up. It is in excellent condition and looks like the passenger seats have never been used....

Hi

You can't go wrong with the X5. Driving a 2005 X3 myself and what a pleasure. Have some issues but the driving pleasure makes up for it. Enjoy driving it around.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am really keen on the car but i am still getting some very negative input. I am trying to investigate exactly what these extended warranties will cover. It is looking like a big gamble right now... :argh:

Sometimes those warranties can be a waste of time. Perhaps put that extra money aside for any recent issues you may pick up.

That X5 is a BULLETPROOF machine and you'd kick yourself in the nuts for passing it up if it's in good condition.

Just have the rear suspension checked out, as the X5 was known for failure in that department (air suspension). If it was repaired or replaced, all good. If not, and it's still okay, be prepared for a suspension change. The good thing here is that you need not go for air suspension again should it need replacing.

Post some pics of the car.

And welcome to the forum

Looking to buy one in a few months.

.They say tyres are exp
.do a flap delete
.turbo may fail if it had not been in good hands prev
.I hear manual is better than auto as you wouldn't know the amount of prev abuse.
.Shorter service intervals.

The pros are too many to mention but keep in mind that the 3.0L diesel offers good power at an economical price.

Thanks for the input i spoke to some guys that have worked on these and they also say the tranny and the rear suspension are the most common major failures. They recommend i take out the extended warranty with top-up from innovation group. They have put through these claims without issues.

Here are some pics...

Hey Guys, So i ended up getting the X5 and i'm loving it more and more each day. Ride is a bit hard but it makes up for it in the handling department. Didn't realise that the tank was so big at 95l, got quite a shock to see the Petrol pump cost! let's see how far she gets on the tank.

Thanks for all the input.

I'm sure she'll get pretty darn far on a tank! If you're interested in tracking your consumption over time check out:

www.fuelly.com

It's an awesome website for tracking consumption data and comparing it to other drivers of cars just like your own!

My signature has my Jetta in it - I only just started using it and because of how I set it up it requires two fuel-ups to estimate my consumption, but you should go look for yourself!

Oh and welcome to the forum man!

Thanks Man, i have already set it up, just need to figure out how to get it in Signature... I am a bit nervous right now as it says about 800km, perhaps it needs to get used to my driving to estimate accurately...

You can look at getting around 8.5l/100 km's travelling at 120 on the open road. This will give u over 1000kms to a tank but the trip computer will not display more range than 999km. Around town I get 11l/100 km and I have a heavy foot.

My turbo failed at 200,000 Kms and I removed it myself and sent it to Turbo Direct who completely rebuilt it for R5,000. I refitted, took the injectors to be cleaned and tested (they were all still within spec) and 20,000 Kms later it's running like a bird.

Original transmission (auto). Interestingly mine was not fitted with swirl flaps and I chose not to remove the EGR valve as it was not gunked up and was working perfectly. I did remove the catalytic converter as it alieviates back pressure on the turbo and we do not have emissions regulations.

Best advice I can give? Use the correct grade oil ( I used BMW approved Castrol Edge ) and I always use 50ppm diesel.

Do not listen to people who tell u to baby the engine ! This is not a hilux, it's an award winning high performance engine and you will be doing it no favors by dawdling. Put Foot on a regular basis and let the turbo cool down for a minute or so after a hard run. This will keep things nice and clean and in perfect fettle.

It's an amazing machine !!!

Tires can be had for around R2500 for the 19" and you will NEVER get worse than 13l/100 km and even then you would have to be pulling a train or something :)

We have a 2005 X5 3.0 diesel in the family. I drive it quite often and its a real joy to drive. We're sitting now on 198 000km and only just replaced front control arms now. No other major issues. Normal wear and tear items that you would need to replace on every other car. Other than that, the car has been great.

Hope she brings you many happy Miles!!!
