Well Done BMW CLub. Great to be there. Unfortunately wifes 850 blew a water hose at the entrance gate and with time constraints it didn't get on the track, however a few minutes after the parade I made a repair and car was back on the road.

Quick update:
Between a manual count and the barcode system we used we had 446 cars on the track yesterday. Strange bit is we had 529 registrations, so there were a pile of people who didn't pitch. No matter though, I think 446 is epic in any book, and hopefully a book with the name 'Guinness' on the front...
From here though that number may not be recognised as official. Because of the ridiculous rules that Guinness put down, we have to go through all the evidence and footage and present our claim to them on a number that meets every single one of them (following distance is the biggie as many drivers didn't keep with the pack) From what we looked at yesterday, we should be able to make a claim for somewhere between 200 and 300, then the small number of 178 starts to make a little more sense...
Personally though, the Guinness side of things means far less to me than the sight of all those BMWs on one race track. The atmosphere yesterday was awesome and a day I will remember for years to come. Well done and thank you to each and every person that participated, we could not have done it without you.:ty:
I will keep you updated with help we need with evidence as soon as we have our ducks in a row tomorrow. Hangover mixed with tired body and state of euphoria means I don't think I will be doing much work today...:nonono:

On 6 July 2013 BMW Car Club Gauteng set out to break the Guinness World Record for the largest BMW Parade. The attempt took place during the Cedar Isle Auto BMW Track Day at Kyalami circuit, and while 446 BMWs were counted on circuit the record will not be recognised by Guinness as official.
The reason for this is that one of the specific requirements as set out by Guinness of the pack keeping in formation, not overtaking and maintaining a consistent following distance was not met. The organisers could only sufficiently and confidently claim that less than 60 cars followed the rules to the letter throughout the entire parade.
Organiser, Michael Broom had this to say “While we may not have a successful claim for Guinness, I am thrilled with the way it turned out. To put 446 cars on a track, do a lap at a slow speed and get them all off again in under an hour was nothing short of a miracle. We had 446 BMW owners in the same place at the same time for a common cause; the resulting camaraderie is worthy of more celebration than a recognition from Guinness. I personally thank each and every person who contributed in any way; it was a day I will remember forever.”
BMW Car Club Gauteng therefore still have a claim number with Guinness as they have chosen not to submit evidence should they decide to attempt it again.

Guinness is like insurance. Will always try their utmost best not to accept your claim. We all know that we broke the record fair and square :thumbs:

Look we did this attempt with zero budget, relied on media and viral marketing to get the word out and had to do it in conjunction with one of our events so we didn't have to pay for a venue a second time. Hopefully what we did will be noticed and if we decide to do it again perhaps we can get a proper budget together.
The formation issue was not so much around 4 abreast but more on following distance and overtaking. Like I said, I am not unhappy at all. What we all did (all 446 of us) is worth so much more than a certificate. We showed SA and the world what BMW enthusiasts in SA are capable of and just how much pulling power the brand has. We may or may not plan another attempt, but more than anything we have shown that enthusiasts will answer the call, not just for the sake of breaking a record but because of the passion we share.
