Guess the labour

in hours to remove an alternator from an E39 M5.

Savspeed reckons two hours and R1200.
BMW seems to think 2 hours and R1200 is a good time.

I chose to go with "The German Workshop" because they were closer for me to tow the car.

Bear in mind that I stripped the entire assembly in front before sending it off. So, they had to remove two bolts and then re-fit a new alternator.

I would say 2 to 3 hours with everything in place, at least that is my experiance with the M60

But if you have stripped everything off already, including the radiator in some cases... then it should be quick.

Does it share a common bolt with the oil filter housing ?

Nope, one bolt for a tensioner it shares and another to the bracket.
Air cooled. and Radiator stays in place at all times.

This may be a stupid question... but if you have got that far why not just remove teh two bolts yourself and fit?

I couldn't get the bolts loose on the alternator and was afraid of breaking something expensive.

dont forget they also had put the bolts back in so that’s twice the work LOL

thats crazy thats double what the dealership would have charged, sometimes mechanics will hit you over the head

look, make no mistake, its a crap job, there is no space to work on, and you do have to take half of the pulley's and things off, but 5.5 hours is insane...
