Grinding sound - reverse gear (steptronic)

Hello all

My 530d steptronic makes a sort of grinding sound and slight vibration in reverse gear, bot ONLY if I actually have to use the accelerator to make the car reverse, for example on an uphill.

Otherwise, normal reversing using the brake only is perfectly fine.

A folk or two mentioned it may be diff oil that needs changing :dunno:

Any other possibilities?

Mileage on the car is 251xxx km.

:ty:

Maybe check diff and gearbox oil? I understand they not that difficult to replace. Might be something simple. I remember seeing an episode of Wheeler Dealers with a Porsche Boxster S that had a gearbox issue and it ended up being something trivial and cheap to fix. Any idea when last it was checked/changed?

So maybe start there at the very least? Just ensure you get the right grades of both oils and roll up your sleeves . It doesn't seem like a big problem now so if you can nip it in the bud,and it sorts it out, wallah, cheap and easy.

Ok ok,you got me!:roflol: Still cheaper than a new gearbox! Well it will be interesting to find out what the cause is.I wonder how many people have this problem and then get told they need a new gearbox?

The thing is, all the other gears are perfect. And it only does it if I really need to accelerate in reverse.

If it was the gearbox, wouldn't it be a constant problem?

I just read a couple of other forums regarding this issue.

Seems it may well be the engine mounts (which I believe are vacuum controlled, and have been disabled). This sounds has been there since I've had the car, though.

A lot of people seem to have the same issue, but 5 years plus after noticing the issue for the first time they have had no problems.

Relief, as I believe it's not the gearbox.

Shew....

Engine mounts are over R1k each. And then still the labour. I would plan on doing the gearbox service sometime as well. It will add such peace of mind and prolong the service life immensely. The sooner the better and the longer the box will last :)

See it as lifetime parts. Once you've replaced them they'll last as long as they previously did.

With a great car comes great responsibility. (and deep pockets)
