Shudder on Reverse on Start Up

Hi Guys

Please can you share some advise if possible,

I have a shudder on Reverse on start up on my BMW ( E90 PRE LCI, Auto )

It started the other night, I don't use the car anymore as I am using the focus, so it was standing for a week, I only drive it on weekends, it was standing for 2 weeks before I started it the other day,

It doesn't feel like it is an engine shudder more like the gearbox or diff,

After I drive for few mins it doesn't do it again until it cools down and I leave it for about 5 hours and start again then it will do it again,

the shudder its like its jerking and reversing on ilde move, if I press accelerator in reverse it will just reverse with no problem,

any advise,

I was thinking of checking Diff oil, gear box oil, but before I start poking fingers I wanted to know if you guys have any idea what it could be

thank you

Could be engine mounts.

Mmmh very interesting I never thought of that, will check that also,

why only on cold start thou,

please excuse my ignorance cause I am really dumb when it comes to cars, but my car does not have a dual mass flywheel right, so it cant be clutch and stuff lol, I know I know people are gonna laugh cause I said its an Auto, but I did some research online and seems the people who had similar issues was due to clutch failing,

on the E39 of mine, the oil filled engine mount caused similar
now vibration at idle, out of gear
engage reverse, feels like the engine wants to climb out of the chassis
drive in reverse, ok, but as I came to a stop, to change to forward drive...bad vibration

cold oil in the engine mount, made it worse

replaced engine mount...all OK

could be similar ?

Sounds like mounts.

How much of vibration is there when switching the car off? My car used to have a slight shudder when idling and rolling at idle ( in forward or reverse).

I changed both mounts as well as the gearbox mounts.

Hi

thanks for the feedback, it isn't a bad vibration, its kinda like the car wants to reverse and also doesn't want to reverse unless you press accelerator,

but after about 2km, you can stwitch off and start and take off or reverse its fine,

I also read about oil falling into things that cause it to do that on start up hence i asked about the gearbox, but i don't even have oil dripping or anything that i can see,

I also read about the flex disc, but i manually inspected mine, without removing it and seems fine,

how will i know which mounting to check and if it is gone,

another thought was that the Diff has less oil, caus ei know the main bearing seal on the diff is leaking a little, but very very little, doesn't even drop on the floor, I already spoke to a guy to help me change the seal,

I also heard a comment, not sure how true, but sounds to me like crap, that because the car is stranding now the oil is getting thick that's why on start up it vibrates, i don't know, i use proper oil,

I honestly cant think of anything else,

Hi bud,

so as much as it could very well be engine mounts and gearbox mounts....my Merc had a similar issue in D or R and it actually turned out to be a the QCV valve that malfunctioned and was causing the jerk, rev dip and shudder.

best also, check diagnostics or else you could end up looking at too many options and stressing yourself our unnecessarily.

Good luck!

Hi

Thank you, There is no errors thou, I have an OBD2 scanner and I don't pick up any errors,

But very interesting, I will try to start and take off in sports mode and see what happens, might rule out something,

I wish it threw an error code, I also read that if thhe MAF centre is dirty etc etc can cause it, lol,

just too many ifs,

It really makes me sad that I parked it off so that it can have a long healthy life and its going crazy parked off lol,

I will google that PVC sensor and see maybe I can clean it and test,

thank you for the feedback,

Hi,

Some feedback, found the problem, its the Damper pulley,

what beats me, you know I am paranoid, it doesn't wobble,

it moves in and out, like forward and backwards, I don't see any damage to the rubber, so I am wondering if it is not the crank shaft, I pray not,

I will order a new Damper pulley and change it and pray it is just the damper pulley,

Has anyone also had a similar issue where the damper pulley moves forward and then backwards,

Never heard of the dampener being the cause of vibrations like this.

Good luck. Let us know.
