Will you be keeping it 3.62? Or will you be replacing the internals of the diff with that from another LS unit?
The joys of the large case diff

BTW, if I am not mistaken you have the trailing arms of a 330i on your touring at the moment....what are your plans with those?

Well I can change out the ring and pinion with another at any time, will start out on the 3.62 and later maybe 3.23 or close to it.
The 330i trailing arms are going into the silver touring project.

The M3 complete rear end is in, unfortunately I cannot use the 330i discs and calipers as the spacing on the M3 hub is wrong, good thing I got M3 calipers with the trailing arms. I need to buy M3 rear discs now @ R3900 for the set...
Also the 330i 6spd propshaft is too long so I need a M3 one.

So its not a cheap mod for e46s yet

Sent from my HTC Wildfire S A510e using Tapatalk 2

Its costing me double than i originally antisipated and still by no means a cheap or simple conversion.

Finished the job 21:45 last night. Will take her for alignment just now. First impressions are GOOD hehehe. Did a donut to test the LS and it feels like my E36, finally!!! When is the next Zwartkops skidpan session? Im there!!

Time for pics:
Old setup 330i auto rear with 3.15 open diff dropped out, one man job!

M3 stuff in

First thing you notice is the width of the handbrake shoe, its 30mm wide yet uses the same diameter drum as the 330i/d which has a 20mm shoe, this means a 50% increase in handbrake power for any 330i/d by using M3 handbrake shoes.

330i shoe.

First issue, 330i caliper on M3 trailing arm sits to far away from the 330i disc by around 10-12mm. Only solution is M3 disc and caliper.

The next thing you find is the propshaft is around 40mm too long, instead of shortening mine I picked up a M3 propshaft from Boetie but it was minus the CV so I used the 330i CV which fits, yay. Propshaft sorted.

Looks a little different from the back now but only a fanatic will go "Hey, wait a minute!"

On a side note, the discs I ordered from BMW are for an October 2004 model which is what the rest of the parts were from and are 328mmx20mm vs the older M3 models that have the 325mmx28mm disc. 330i is 320mmx22mm

in the end will cost about the same as an aftermarket LSD with more work involved :(

unless you can get the parts really cheap like you did

135i calipers will also work Warren. But I like what you have done. :)

What about the "V brace" that locates right under the diff and anchors close to the rear jacking points

And now you will have to do something like this on the front brakes:

The car doesn't have the two outer bolt holes, nor have I found that subframe brace where the middle bolt would go into, still looking.

Just got back from TWT and the car feels good, very slight vibration in the prop around 100km/h, I think maybe a weight has been knocked off at some stage so I will get it re-balanced soon. For the front discs I think those 330i performance discs will do the trick as fitting M3 hubs with discs and calipers ain't gonna happen...

Just get the 330i Performance discs. No need to change hubs and calipers.
