They do indeed anton. Only thing is mine is based on the E12 cos of the year. They changed the underpinnings in 1984 when the E28 came out. But I reckon it's much of a muchness.

actually, it will then be e12/8 based, which afaik anyway shares suspension setup etc with e28. (e12/8 is essentially e12 body with e28 everything)

however i think the rear diff is different in that its the old sideloader type,
but a different diff carrier and diff will sort that.

also in netherlands, there is a guy by the name of ivo christof
http://www.e28.nl/

he did a conversion in a e28 consisting of m57d30 (e46/e39 330d/530d)
theres footage on youtube somewhere. youtube search skarknose 2014
you will get a few videos of 2014 sharknose meeting (e28/e24) in netherlands...

there was also the above conversion (diesel)...

Nope. e12 and e28 cars are very different especially suspension wise. As an ex owner of a e28 car I know that NOTHING except a few minor pieces of trim fits both cars. I think the windscreens may be interchangeable.

E12/8. Not an e12. There's a difference. The e12/8 is the e12 body with the e28 dash

All "e28's" in sa from 82 till early.85 are.essentially e12 body's with e28 interior(except door.panels) and e28 suspension bar the sidemount.diff. They are also known as.e12/8

I suspect buggers 635 if it's a 82 or 83 or 84 I suspect it also has some mishmash of parts hence my comment of being e12/8 based.

Thanks for the input so far guys. So now that I'm in front of my PC, I'll share some of the thoughts I have.

So I am thinking that IF I do this, I will retain all the original parts so that should the car be sold, they will go with it.
But I'm thinking engine wise, S62, with all the management bits and pieces. Now obviously this is going to depend on a couple of things, cost and availability of the engine, whether or not it will fit etc. So will need to do some investigation.
Complete overhaul of the electronics and management systems, the interior redone, possibly with an E46 M3 interior. I'll probably have to get the dash customised to fit in the car, door cards etc.
I'm thinking that the car will be based on E39 M5 and E46 M3 underpinnings, that's kinda where I am leaning to. Then all the suspension components Anton said.
Something like this:

 It is....I'm not sure about the red interior though,I'd probably keep it black, but that's the platform I'm kinda angling at.

That car looks so hot :inlove:

I think I might keep the colour stock. However, Diamond Black was an awesome colour on old Bimmers. I'm getting excited about the prospect of a custom build...

Some advice from someone who has spent a small house on his 6.

Keep the suspension E28/E12 and upgrade with E34 M5 parts; control arms, sway bars, Bilstein B6 and Eibach springs, poly bushes, strut bars etc. Mine rides flat as fuck with 9j up front and 10.5j rear and I'm too scared to push harder and she can go harder. Keep the wheels at 16".

Engine, stick a S38B36 in there, it FITS. Custom fabrication work in this country is shit and good work is only done by the very few and the very expensive, putting anything else in there is going to cost you eye watering money. It's not worth it. Rebuilding an S38 will cost a fuck-ton of money but you can get close to 400hp out of it.
The best option is to turbo your M90/M30, seriously. These engines are forged where it counts. Get some custom pistons and a TCD RHD kit and you're halfway there. For $ to HP ratio, turbo is the only way. Currently I have spent just over R65000 on my engine ALONE, just to get 270HP, bolt on mods only, bottom end is stock.

If you embark on this, plan everything from the beginning and I mean everything. I have had to go back and re-do things because I didn't do it right first time and it is fucking painful. Work out a program, start with body work and trim, then suspension and finish with engine. Halfway through pricing the rubber trimming you'll realise what you're in for, but at least you won't have dropped R60k on an M3 engine. R15000 for rubber door seals, and that's just the top half of the seal.

Look through these places for ideas

The best advice I can give you is 'Don't do it'. Rather spend the money on whisky and women. It'll end up costing less. I know this sounds like I'm pissing on your dreams here but I Just want you to be prepared. You're welcome to come have a look at Helga any time and I'll show you my book of receipts :p It's been 4 years and she's been on the road for 1.
Good luck!

So the last time I posted in this thread I was considering doing some custom work to the E24, maybe an engine swap etc. Some of you guys came up with some ideas.

So I decided not to do anything to the car, rather keep it in it's stock, original format and present it as the classic barn find car.

Last year in about November the car stopped running. I suspected a dodgy fuel tank due to rust, and set out on a year long crusade to get a new tank. Eventually I lost all interest in trying to get the car running, hence the questions regarding doing a custom job.

Reading through Skank's thread and a couple of others,I decided to try and get the old girl on her feet again. I managed to source a tank from Skank, transported it to Cape Town, and at the beginning of this week got stuck in.

I replaced the tank, the fuel sender unit is a bit iffy, but hey,you make do with what you have. After much faffing and manoeuvring, I managed to get the tank back in. Then reassembling the fuel rail, injectors, change the valve cover gasket (this was removed last year so I could clean up the cover) and try and start.

At first there was nothing, replaced the battery with an extra I had, charge it over night, see where that leads. So for Monday and Tuesday it was very much about getting the car back together and then fault finding. I just couldn't get the car to start. Strong crank but it just wouldn't take.

I sought some advice from some fellow Fanatics (thanks to Gizmo, Skank and Wes), and managed to narrow it down to a couple of problems. I replaced the plugs, adjusted some things here and there, and this morning the car started. Very rough (I suspect for standing around for a year, and some old fuel in the lines), but did manage to get it out of the garage and moving under it's own steam.

So the old girl is running again, and I am most pleased. I got a set of Scorpion rims for the car when I bought my 535i,so have put those on,thought I'd save the original TRX rims cos the tyres are so hard to find. While the car was out, managed to snap some pics with her new sister.

So some gratuitous porn!

Thanks guys, been an interesting ride finding both of them to be honest. But very rewarding when you see them sitting next to each other!

Just wish I had more time to spend on them, they're a bit of a labour of love! But at the same time a love/hate relationship keeping them going.

Thanks Ford, 87 E24 can't be easy to find!!

You have two of the most iconic cars of the 80's. Keep them rather stock and well maintained so future generations can still enjoy these timeless classics. These two cars are a true testament to the engineering genius bmw had back then, unfortunately bmw followed the global trend to making disposable cars so we will never see the likes of these engineering masterpieces again. Quite sad really.
Glad you got the old girl running again, major props man!
