Fantastic progress Gavin, great to see some love being shared for the x3. My wife wants nice sound in hers now since I bought her an iPod and fitted an iPod integration kit.

Just one thing I noticed, slotting the discs is going to chew through your pads much faster than before and your wheels will always be dirty. For a daily driver the stock brakes are the best option in my experience.

Awesome work and thank you for logging these things so meticulously with us.

It’s so annoying when you know something is up and the dealers either don’t know what to look for or sometimes simply don’t care

Threads like these help define the problem a bit better

The slotting and heat treatment was R600 ex vat per disc.

If ya dont mind bud, where ?

As mentioned in a previous post: Vari Racing in Edenvale.

Anyway. So yesterday afternoon ended off on a disappointing note: my wife called me to tell me that someone has swiped the passenger door mirror glass.

Very annoying indeed. Also concerning as someone must have been watching her movements. This took place at Eden Meadows mall (opposite greenstone shopping center).

Now it’s either some twat who wants to go and sell it again, or it was a hit/order for that piece.

Otherwise it’s potentially some drug addict. I believe that some mirrors have a powder in them which is either sniffed, or mixed into a cocktail with other drugs.

Phoned around, new is R2200 from BMW, or R1500 from MD House but they don’t have stock.

I’m going to try City Deep next week and see if they have.

Update time:

Managed to source a glass from an X3 sitting at a scrapyard. R900 vs R2200 from the stealers for a new one. :thumbdo:

Fitting it here, you can see the 2 wires to connect up for the heating function, and then the glass has this plastic backing which then clips into the motor itself:

All fitted:

But alas, our encounters with Twats continued into the festive season. Following my wife's trip to a shopping centre, I noticed this when she came home:

Thankfully, I managed to polish most of the white/grey paint off, so now there are only some hairline scratches into our car's paint:

I also forgot to mention in a previous update, that some Twat opened a door into the side of the car, denting the fender on the crease just behind the front left wheel. I suspect that won't just push out, and will need repairs and a respray. Unfortunately that will have to wait for a bit.

Oh yes, since the Carbon Clean in August last year, we have covered approx. 2300kms. Fuel consumption is still sitting at 14.6l/100kms, so there has not been a noticeable improvement in that department following the clean. Granted, the valves were not that dirty to begin with, so I was not expecting any changes to be honest.

Other than that, it is still serving us well as the gas guzzling family car :smilebounce:

Edit: no idea why pictures don't display the correct way. Mods - any suggestions?

May-2018 update:

Well the car has been doing it's duties as the mommy-mobile the last few months. We also had booked a trip to the KZN south coast for the recent long weekend at the end of April, so I was looking forward to enjoying the space and comfort on the long drive.

And then the sh1t started....

25-April: my wife is in eyesight of our house, and the car pops up a yellow warning message that it's hot - proceed with caution. As she pulls into the driveway, the yellow message turns red: engine overheated. I got home a couple of hours later and did some checks: no leaks under the car and the expansion bottle is still on the max. indication mark, so no fluid loss.

DannyBoyOPC came through to scan for codes, and there were some issues about forced upshift to protect engine, and also something about the waterpump not operating due to a blockage. Now bear in mind, when we bought the car, it went to BMW for it's final service before going out of plan, they found a water leak on the pump, and replaced the water pump, along with 2 water hoses, that was 18months/12000kms ago. They didn't replace the thermostat (why boggles my brain - makes sense to do both), but anyway...

So Thursday, 26-April, I source a new thermostat from BMW, which I only got that afternoon. Danny came to help again, and we got the car sorted early evening. I test drove about 30kms that evening and all seemed well. No warnings, and going into the hidden menus showed the coolant temperature fluctuating within the acceptable range (which led me to believe the thermostat is working.

Friday, 27-April, 3am: We're on our way to the south coast. Then just after passing Heidelberg, the car pops up the yellow warning light that it's getting hot, and shortly after that, the red warning that it's overheating. Thankfully it was just as we were passing a Total garage, so we pulled in there and waited for things to cool down.

After much swearing, we decided to turn back, and try limp back home and swap cars. Starting the car up again, coolant temp was on 72 degrees, and on the route back home there were no issues, no warnings, no overheating.

Fast forward to 3-May, and I booked the car in at BMW for checking. Our thinking is that the water pump electronics are faulty, so sometimes it works and sometimes it decides to say it's not working. I'm still awaiting feedback from BMW. If it is the water pump, it's still within the 24month warranty so they should then replace it.

Really odd and intermittent behavior, but that's electronics for you.

Will update once I know more...

Oh Gav, that hectic, its the one thing i always dread on a long trip. Am glad you managed to limp home and hopefully BMW comes to the party.

When the warning came up, the hidden menu was also reporting high temps?

So at normal temps, it fluctuated between 80-100degrees approx. Then I could see it was about to give shit, because the temps were climbing steadily: 101, 102, 103, 104, 105 etc, like 1degree per second.

When it got to 120, the yellow warning in the I-drive screen pops up, and a warning also pops up in the cluster, so I couldn’t see the temp anymore.

Then a few seconds later, a red warning on both displays. Interestingly, I don’t recall the oil temp going up/ higher than usual.

Sitting at the dealer now again to try clarify some nonsense. They say it’s the pump, but will only honour the warranty if they fit it. So they cover the pump cost, but I must pay for labour, fluids, testing etc.

Yet they still want to invoice me R13k for a pump and labour

The car was repaired last Thursday, and I collected at the end of the day.

I must give credit where credit is due: Bedfordview BMW provided great service. I dealt with Ashley, and she kept me informed on a daily basis about progress on the diagnosis and repairs, and facilitating a (failed) aftermarket warranty claim (that's a story for another day).

I was also expecting a bill for diagnosis and labour, but was pleasantly surprised when they said a special request was put through, and Motorplan was covering all costs of the repair.

The car was also super clean and shiny inside and out.

We've done a couple of trips the past few days, and everything seems to be in order.

I must say, going from the 1-series to this, it feels huge and imposing on the road :cartel:

Time to enjoy the car again, but I am itching for a DP to unlock some sonorous tunes from the motor and exhaust.
