Update for 2019:

So in November last year, I decided to bite the bullet, and get my rims refurbished. Each of the wheels was bent, and a couple had some minor chips and curb rash on them.

Here's me sporting the gloss black look on the loan rims (not my favourite look I must say):

I was in 2 minds whether to leave them standard, or to try something slightly different. In the end, I took a few brave pills and told them to finish in Black Chrome (same colour as on my Ute).

Here are the results:

At the same time, I fitted new tyres: Continental Sport Compact 5 MO in 225-40-18 all-round.

Here's some pics of my old tyres (Hankook Ventus V12 Evo). Brilliant tyres these. They gripped well, lasted well and were quiet. They have served me well for about 8 years I think, putting up with the daily grind, plus a few gymkhana and skid pan days, and more recently the track day at Red Star Raceway.

And the best part: 76000kms on this set :smilebounce:

As part of my global shopping antics, and my inherent weakness to purchase hard-to-find parts, I found a set of these:

Genuine OEM BMW Performance gloss black grilles for the pre-FL E87:

Here's a pic next to the stock chrome grilles:

I wasn't happy with the white from the bumper which was showing through the grilles, so the next day they came out again, and I applied some top secret blackout material to the area, and refitted the grilles.

So far I'm happy with the look.

The guy I purchased the grilles from also happened to have an OEM stubby aerial. So I decided that I would have that too. There were some marks on the end (almost like it had been chewed, lol), so i flatted it down, filled with some filler, and then flatted off and coated with plastidip.

Ok to clarify, this is an OEM BMW Filter. It pretty much looks identical to the K&N, but this is a dry filter as opposed to the oiled K&N version.

The filter does what it does, lol. I can't honestly say that there is a difference in noise compared to the standard paper filter (remember when I fitted my intake, I installed this filter straight away as well, so the noise is from all of this combined).


Other than that, no major updates on the car. Was busy with a few other projects earlier this year, including refurbishing a Thule roofbox (will start a seperate thread on that for anyone who is interested).

Here's a quick pic of the roofbox on the car (on Thule Wingbar Edge roof racks):

I gave the car a wash today, and checked when servicing is due - only at year-end, so will be relatively quiet until then.

Might pop through to the Dyno day tomorrow if things are quiet on the home-front...

Update Sep-2019:

My original gear knob was looking a bit tired, with the leather having worn and torn from 12 years of use.

I've kept my eyes on the classifieds to see if anything worthwhile pops up. Unfortunately most of what pops up is also worn and ratty. I also considered purchasing a new one (comes with the leather boot), or even the ZCP weighted knob from the 1M. This may still be an option in the future.

Then I came across one for sale, which was fitted to an E90. Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. (Interesting fact: the E90 and E87 M-Sport cars are the only ones which use this particular knob, and where the knob is a part of the leather boot as well).

The leather boots are different on each car, so I needed to carefully remove the boot from the knob, without tearing the leather or breaking the plastic clips.

Next up - the dreaded removal of the original knob. From everything I had read, it requires a momentous amount of force, and almost everybody cautioned about hitting yourself in the face -this after they suffered the same fate :smilebounce:


So, I got in the car (removed glasses), said a prayer and braced myself for the huge heave with 2 hands. Ready... steady.... pull! Thankfully mine came off without too much force or too much fuss. Mission accomplished:

Here's a a pic comparing the E87 boot (left) with the E90 boot (right):

I then set about carefully removing my old knob from the leather boot, and swapping across the replacement knob and attaching to the leather boot:

Thereafter it was a simple case of pushing the new knob back on, and then clipping the leather boot back into the centre console. Job done:

Update Nov-2019:

I recently purchased a whole bunch of stuff from ABM. Big shout out again to Deago and JP for the super service and assistance.

Next month will be service time for this car. I'll post details and pics once that happens...

Update Jan-2020:

I've been a bit slack updating my threads, but will have a little bit of extra time in the coming weeks, so will bring things back up to current.

Let's wind back the clock to the end of 2019, I had ordered a bunch of parts from the guys at ABM for the maintenance required on the Sadler fleet. I collected this, but made a conscious decision not to immobilise all cars at the same time.

The M3 went to Peter for the rod bearings (thread updated elsewhere). Next on the list was to service the 130i. Mileage was on 151850kms.

Getting ready for the work ahead:

I first inspected the cabin filter. It still looks good, so just shook the loose dust out (Mileage covered = 8300kms odd in 3yrs):

Next up, drain the oil, and remove oil filter:

Old oil didn't look too dirty, which is understandable as the car doesn't see big mileage anymore:

New oil going in:

And I also replaced the air filter, as this one had been in there for quite some time (33000kms odd). I purchased a new one, as I wasnt sure whether this was a paper-type filter or material filter, so I didn't want to wash it and have a disintegrated filter in a bucket. Subsequently, I did wash the old filter, and it is good as new, so it's in storage for when I need it again, I'll apply some filter oil when the time comes.

Then as a random stat, I've been busy with my logbooks for SARS, and in the 2019,2020 tax year I've done a whopping total of 1907kms in this car.

But rest assured, those 1907kms have been all smiles and lots of goose bumps. I really do love this car and hope to keep it until I'm vintage myself lol.
