G20 M340i vs F80 M3 CP

Hi to all the fellow BMW Fanatics,

Hope y'all enjoying the festive season.

From the title I'm sure you can figure out what this thread is about....

This is a topic I have been meaning to debate about and I was wondering what your opinion would be irt these two vehicles.

Starting price of the M340i is R982 000, but add a few extra options and it's well above the 1 bar price mark. I quickly built one on the Bmw configurator and it came in close to 1.3M.

I had a look online and found a few 2019 M3 CP's for below 1.3M and all of them have less than 5000k's on the clock.

Benefits for the F80:
S55 vs B58.
Full "M" car and not just "M-Performance".
F80 looks.

Benefits for the G20:
xDrive.
G20 chassis.
ID 7 with new interior design.
Improved cabin space, especially in the rear.

With the above being said..... Which one would you have and why?

If you've driven them both then the answer is obvious. M340i makes sense only if you shop based on spec sheet or are one of those guys that refuses to buy a full fat M or AMG or RS for various reasons.

Maybe if you care about the updated comforts and infotainment more than performance, handling and feel you would be swayed to the M340... but then why pay R1.3M instead of ticking every box on a 330i instead? At that point you obviously dont care about what an M offers and a 330i is a very fun daily with all those 340i updates...

For 1.3m and a bit, I’d skip both and get the F90 M5. It offers the best of both worlds. Some say the best super saloon in its segment. Hard to argue against that. However I’ve only seen 1 at R1.359m 2018 with under 30,000km on the clock.

There have been quite a few at that price... even below 20000km. They dont stick around long. F90 makes every other 4 door car seem like a dumb decision at that price point...

as a daily 340i, as a weekend warrior F80.
In the long term the F80 will hold its value better.

I often find it odd in these threads where x35 and x40 are recommended as dailies and M cars for weekends.

Why?

If you're going to spend all that money on maintenance, face similar (if not worse) reliability issues and have the same (if not worse) fuel bill, same (if not worse) depreciation... PLUS require mods to keep up with the M which will void the ever-more delicate motorplan, what exactly makes the x35/40 the 'exciting daily' and the M for weekend use only?

The B48 and diesel based cars are more suited to the DD use if you had those kinds of concerns and then you would have you x35/x40 or M for the weekend. I would have guessed you have the x35/40 if you want to mod and show up the 'bigger dogs'... or perhaps if you had a very hardcore track weapon or high end GT/sports car in the garage for the weekend... but not based on what people recommend

340i is just another 3 series... you know

M3 is an M car and it has a special place in BMW heritage and fanatics hearts.

Not sure if the English is coming across the same way it sounds in my head.

Price point of m340i doesn't make it comparable to an M for me. Solid car but you'll be much happier in an M. If you want practicality, try an RS6 station wagon. Now that's practicality, safety, awd surety and super car performance all in one.

I cannot wrap my head around paying that for a M340i.. At that pricepoint as well I would look for something different to be honest.. I have not seen one on the road yet, actually do not see too many G20s around.. The price point argument really comes in, you can buy some really cool cars which are not that old for less than that and I suspect a lot of people do..

M3 CP gets my vote here..I drove a M4 CP, in the short time I had it I could feel how special it is, man it is an insane car, rough, race car like but awesome, if I were to make a choice now I know what I would choose, I like the new tech and Android CarPlay is confirmed for the G series next year so that is cool.. But as a petrol head I'd take the motor over the tech.. My 2c..

With everything mentioned above, I would go for the M3/4 and make sure it has adaptive dampers.
