Hi guys

My cousin is looking at purchasing one of the above SUV's pre-owned and is torn between the two.

What would you choose and why?

Also anyone with first hand experience of both the vehicles would be great.

Tiguan will be the Highline spec with 20inch wheels, 7 speed DSG, 4Motion

Pics for attention....

Tiguan has a dual clutch gearbox which will be more problematic and cost more to maintain than the ZF box in the BMW.

The Tiguan is actually an X1 competitor, but is slightly bigger.

Also, the Tiguan has a service plan as standard while the X3 has a full maintenance plan as standard. However, you can extend the Tiguan plan up to 10 years or 300,000km and upgrade it to a full maintenance plan. BMW only goes up to 7 years extension.

The X3 is the better choice

Are these two even in the same league though?

Yes I think they are in the mid size SUV category.

Smaller T-Roc, T-Cross etc in the same category of the X1 while the Toureg competes with the X5.

If you want to compare the 2, consider the Tiguan All Space 162kw version, basically the Golf 7 GTI motor. The boot space is 700l and it has 7 seats as standard. This is more than a X5. Since this is the top spec Tiguan, for around R800k, the spec level is higher than the X3 20d, which is around R1m mark. Just out of interest, the Tiguan has one of the best resale values of any vehicle in SA. IMO, if you chose the R Line package, it looks better than the X3 especially in blue. Extending the plan is much cheaper as well. For around R80k less, you can chose the 132kw version, which has the same spec as the 162kw, just with less power. As for the diesel option, it would be better if you are doing more mileage.

I love BMW but in this arena, Tiguan 2.0T R Line.
Better value for money, better resale.
Like for like, after 5 years, you have likely paid 20% less than the equivalent X3 Msport initially and kept 20% more on value at the end when you sell.
That's over R150k over the term.
The above is based on having multiple X3s, and currently 2.0T Tiguan R Line in the parents garage.

Thanks for all the input guys.

She ended up going with this 2019 Tiguan 2.0TDi R Line. Has just over 6000kms and still as new. Some nice extras like the digital cockpit and maintenance plan.
